Saints fan sets up own Facebook page to say 'sorry' to Clattenburg over Lallana-gate

Daily Echo: Mark Clattenburg talks to Adam Lallana at Everton last December. Mark Clattenburg talks to Adam Lallana at Everton last December.

A SAINTS fan has set up his own Facebook page to apologise to referee Mark Clattenburg in the wake of Adam Lallana's departure to Liverpool.

Clattenburg was investigated by referees’ chief Mike Riley last January after Saints accused him of ‘abusing and insulting’ Lallana during Saints' 2-1 loss at Everton.

The match official allegedly told Lallana “you have changed since you’ve played for England.”

As a result, Clattenburg received a torrent of online abuse from Saints fan.

Now, though, in the wake of Lallana’s £25m transfer to Anfield, Saints supporter Karl Hopkins has taken to social media to say ‘sorry’ to the referee.

On his Facebook page, Hopkins writes: “It is now with true realisation I can hold my hands up and admit I made a mistake.

“I was wrong to criticise and disbelieve that man in black, the man who received so much abuse and such a backlash for uttering nothing more than the truth, the truth that this man has indeed changed, that he was indeed never like this before.

“He saw that our once proud and humble player was now nothing more than the rest.

“You saw truth when the rest of us allowed ourselves to be covered with that faithful wool over the eyes ... therefore I must apologise to you whole heartedly, sincerely and graciously admit that you were indeed now and always were right.”

Hopkins also writes that his belief that players care for their club as much as fans do is now shattered.

“We believe, we expect, no, we demand that the pride we show is received and reciprocated by all those who put on the crest and take to the field,” he says.

“Unfortunately this is nothing more than a dream ... as fans we have become nothing more than naive. We share a resounding naivety to believe those players feel even as half as loyal and proud as us.

“To think such days of pride and loyalty still live in football is absurd beyond belief.

“Long gone are the days of Matthew Le Tisser who played for the love of the game and the love of his team, the fans and all that football once stood for.

“Instead what are we left with?

“I answer like a knife through the heart – what remains is lacklustre, over ambitious, money grabbing, loyalty excluded players.”

he may have been right about liellana but he will get no apology from me.
he is still a self opinionated jumped up big headed fool who has no business referring a football match between 9yr olds let alone in the prem!
lets not forget the awful decisions he has made in that match, the penalty we should have been awarded for the handball for starters, and other matches we have been involved in. again don't forget that this was his first match at everton for a few years because of his previous awful display between everton (the pride of Liverpool) and diverpooh!
this man is an absolute joke of a referee and should have been stepped down by the FA years ago.
whilst he may have bee correct about liellana he still had no right to say what he did. his job is to be neutral and impartial, and he cant do that if he says things like that to players.

This has to be the silliest article on our player exodus yet. Surprise surprise, Lallana turns out to be an ego inflated, money grabbing, glory seeking, disloyal, self-centred individual. Oh, hang on a minute, that would be like the majority of the population then! Fact is he's gone. The manner of his departure was appalling. Get over it! Forget him. Cheer the team, support the new guys. We're bigger and better than Lallana - whichever side of the field he plays on!

Sorry but refereeing a premiership game is a thankless task every decision scrutinised by any one of 30 cameras in the ground and the other problem , they get no support from their assistants
Added to the fact that they get less in a year than the overpaid idiots they run around the pitch earn in a week indeed a thankless task
When I used to play cricket and anyone moaned about the umpire,I would remind them that with no umpires you don't have a game
Same principal applies

Shaw - £30 million for an 18 year old..... I don't care about his motives for going but at that price it was definitely right for our club!

However, the real scum remains at our club - osvaldo!!! He needs to go and soon - I'm sick of these Italian clubs wanting us to fund their squads!.... Sell him now or sit him in the burger bar to sell us our half time food!

Let's hope for a bit of inbound transfer news soon!

As a sixth form A Level English teacher, I have to repeatedly tell my students not to use Christian names in their essays. If you right "William" or "Evelyn" instead of "Shakespeare" or "Waugh" you are implying a sort of familiarity which impossible in the first instance, and highly unlikely in the second. It is not disrespectful but suggests a proper professional distance. Indeed, a recent survey of hospitals and nursing homes found that many elderly patients resented being called "Doris" or "Florie" by staff who barely knew them.

he is still a self opinionated jumped up big headed fool who has no business referring a football match between 9yr olds let alone in the prem!
lets not forget the awful decisions he has made in that match, the penalty we should have been awarded for the handball for starters, and other matches we have been involved in. again don't forget that this was his first match at everton for a few years because of his previous awful display between everton (the pride of Liverpool) and diverpooh!
this man is an absolute joke of a referee and should have been stepped down by the FA years ago.
whilst he may have bee correct about liellana he still had no right to say what he did. his job is to be neutral and impartial, and he cant do that if he says things like that to players.
No referee is perfect when it comes to making split second decisions on the field. But none deserve the Abuse he was given by us fans. He has every right to give his opinion on players.
no absolutely not, he should never give any opinion about footballers. if he suggest to a footballer he really likes his play and doesn't think he dives and then give a dodgy free kick or penalty because that player has gone down he leaves himself open to some very serious questions.
equally if he tells a player `you've changed since you played for England` and then sends him off for arguing, he also leaves himself open to be questioned.
referees should not voice their opinions on players for those simple reasons, so he was wrong to say it however right he is.

of course refs aren't perfect and it must be hard to make certain decisions, however they are well paid and trained, they receive constant training throughout the year, to do their job. after all that we still expect mistakes they happen, but in that game he didn't give an obvious handball, that stopped a cross coming into the box, which was right in front of him. he has a history of giving extremely poor decisions against us, and whilst he doesn't deserve certain abuse he certainly deserves some for his constant poor performances, and not just against us!
refs get things wrong all the time, but have you been watching the world cup? at corners and free kicks players are being `bear hugged` out of the way, one the other day in the costa rica, Holland game the ref was looking right at, had a camera angle from over his shoulder, you saw both arms wrapped around the attacker and he was being held down yet the ref did nothing! why? give a pen every time and it will soon stop, refs don't help themselves when it comes to things like that.

saint jinx,
what if he had said `do you know who I am`? so what. the ref, cant bring myself to type his name, should have shrugged it off and said `yes of course I do, ive got your name in my little book!`.
why should it bother a ref if a player says that to him? anyone who says that is a joke anyway!

don't get me wrong though, I think the way certain players and clubs treat refs is disgusting, who cant forget seeing the manure players chasing refs around the pitch and screaming in their face. the refs have a response though and that's to book/send off the players, until they do nothing will change.

awful ref who makes poor decisions and frankly, if he was right about Lallana I can only consider that to be the only thing he has ever got right.
I'm with Strops and Horse101 on this. Clutters chose his profession and put himself in the public eye. Thus, his position carries a responsibility to act professionally when on the field of play. Whether or not he's any good is subjective and is sure to be judged by the FA AND by us fans. Frankly, I think he's awful. Nevertheless, those who abused him online should hang their heads in shame. If not for bringing the club's name down, then for giving Clutters every reason to feel prejudiced against us in the future.

But this matter has nothing to do with how well (or badly, in many a Saints match) he refereed last season, nor is it about whether his opinion on Lala was correct or not, it's that the things he said, he shouldn't have said. Why? Because, when he is refereeing, he is supposed to be impartial, and being impartial cannot carry an opinion on the character of a player during the time that he is exercising his professional duty.

So, those who abused him, by all means apologise. However, those of us who questioned his ability as a ref or his professionalism during a match have no reason whatsoever to apologise or reconsider our opinion of him.
