New signing Dusan Tadic should return to action for Saints tonight, while wantaway defender Dejan Lovren may also have to make the short trip to Bournemouth.

Tadic was back in training with his teammates at Staplewood yesterday, after missing Monday’s game against Swindon.

The £11m playmaker, who joined the club earlier this month from FC Twente, was not able to feature at the County Ground, as he had to remain in Holland while waiting for his work permit to come through.

He had been allowed to play in Saints’ opening two pre-season games, but only because they took place on the tour to the Netherlands and Belgium.

Now that he is back, Tadic is expected to feature tonight, as Ronald Koeman takes his squad to the Goldsands Stadium for a clash with Championship rivals Cherries.

He could be joined there by Liverpool target Lovren.

The Croatian centre-half missed Monday’s game against the Robins through injury and did not play on the pre-season tour, having just reported back following World Cup duty.

However, Lovren trained with Saints yesterday and is said to be available to Koeman as an option if he wishes to use him tonight.

It remains to be seen, though, whether the club’s manager wants to play the wantaway defender, who has handed in a transfer request this summer and has said he feels as though his head is already at Anfield.

Koeman said after Monday’s match: “As a manager, I like to work with the players who are happy in Southampton, and I don’t work with the players who are not happy.”

Liverpool are planning to increase their offer for the 25-year-old, having seen two bids rejected for him this summer, and the Reds are confident a £20m deal will soon be sealed.

Saints are aware of the need to sign a replacement, and are working on options, although it is understood that heavily-linked Aston Villa captain Ron Vlaar, who played under Koeman in Holland, is not under serious consideration.

Need to get Tadic settled in asap, hope he stays fit, in fact hope they all do as we are very short of replacements at the moments.

Getting the new players in is clearly more difficult than Les Reed thought. However getting the right quality players is the important thing even if it does take all of the remaining 5 weeks until the window closes.

Difficult to see us getting all the six we require in next couple of weeks in time for Liverhampton though.

Now looks like Saints will need the first few fixtures building and settling in the new players so possible slow start to the season.

Important to sort the want away player situations out asap especially Morgan when he returns this weekend. They must do everything to try to keep him, but should buy Jordy Clasie anyway.

We probably will not receive any £20m+ bids for Lovren until just before the transfer window closes, as clubs will try to get him cheaper knowing the situation has got to the point that he is not involved.

So TWO CB's BETTER than Jose, Jos,Maya & Lovren is an absolute must, as is a TOP Quality STRIKER. NEED these three in urgently before the season starts.

We can possibly cover the other 3 requirements, GK, LB & Winger until nearer the end of August, to give time to concentrate getting the urgent three in first.

Just hope we don't waste money on players who are not BETTER than what we have got, would sooner see which younger ones can do the job and wait until January if we can't get them all in the time left.

So a rebuilding season ahead for Saints so lets all accept that and give RonKo the time to build a team ready to push us back up again the following season.

You are a little provincial outfit and nothing more. Your dreams of Premiership football, whilst cute, are wholly unrealistic you understand. Your role in football, like with the skates, is to help make up the FA cup draw for US BIG clubs. Playing us tonight might only be a friendly, but don't pretend that this isn't your cup final. Very sweet and highly amusing.

Mmm, I thought it was Liverpool/Spurs/ManU
re etc who were a BIG clubs and you lot were the provincial outfit in your league.

Cup final ha-ha?? Sadly I can't agree your allocation is sold out whilst our tickets sold so far suggest there is not a cup final mood from our perspective or that much interest in your new line-up. Accept our Prem dreams might be a bit steep and if we did chance it we'd be a yo-yo club at best, but change does happen for better or for worse, you should know that.

Off topic, but according to the Daily Telegraph, Cardiff are set to pursue their interest in Jose Fonte after the player turned down a new 2 year contract with Saints. If the article is true, Saints have rejected a second bid of £3.25m for Jose but Cardiff are till keen for him to replace Caulker. The better news, according to the Mirror, is we are still in the hunt for Virgil van Djik from Celtic and Ron Vlaar from Villa. We need to get a move on, however, or we'll be relying on Maya and Jos for the first match at Anfield, assuming Lovren will have rejoined his head and be playing for our opponents by then.

I'd say our chances are better than that as we are among the most forward looking and progressive clubs in the country at the moment (however long that lasts?!). I am under no illusions as to our shortcomings wrt stadium/support/fina
nce etc etc. but do a believe a one season shot in the Prem is a realistic expectation if we continue improving at the rate we have.

Anyway here's to a good game, safe journey to all travelling tonight and all the best for the upcoming season.

If we get van Dijk and Frasier from Celtic hope we have the beginnings of a solid defensive unit with Clyne - jury out on Targett and Chambers will have to continue where he left off. Fonte (Staying or going - who knows?) Yoshida may fit the bill but it still doesn't paper over the fact we need yet another PL quality CB in addition to van Dijk (if that is not also paper blx and bs!)

The better news, according to the Mirror, is we are still in the hunt for Virgil van Djik from Celtic and Ron Vlaar from Villa. It seems we all know where we need to strengthen. We need 2 CB's if Lovren goes, a LB, GK and striker. Surely the board and Big Ron know this too, we have money to spend so I am not sure why we seem to be dragging our heels whilst more players look to be leaving or refusing new contracts. I have faith in the manager and I value that we don't want to waste money or put ourselves in financial bother but we also do have money and only have 3 weeks left to build a competitive squad...lets get a win tonight and hope for more positive news over coming days...

Eddie Howe certainly seems to be doing a good job for you again and I hope he gets you up into the prem. I would think he must have a wry smile looking back at his decision to leave Burnley, though if I remember rightly it was for family reasons.

Accept our Prem dreams might be a bit steep and if we did chance it we'd be a yo-yo club at best, but change does happen for better or for worse, you should know that.
s the reason your not selling out that your fans know your in for another beating from your superior neighbours? haven't the bottle for it have they! or is it that the old folks homes don't let them out that late!

It'll be a good run-out tonight for the 'new' Saints against a half-decent opposition. Eddie Howe's done a great job down there and he deserves respect for that as do the team as a whole for achieving what they did last season. It'll be interesting to watch and may produce a few home-truths for our supporters, but win or lose, we should prepare for a difficult few months and give RK and the boys our full support without negative carping - it really doesn't help!!

I'd love Koeman to put his favoured starting XI out tonight from the start. he must have a fair idea which players are his strongest team.

Hope fully the team will be something like this.....
BORUC: CLYNE, CHAMBERS, FONTE, TARGETT: WANYAMA, CORK, DAVIS: TADIC, RAMIREZ: PELLE.

Would love to see how effective Sharp and Mayuka can be from the bench this season too. We have a decent enough squad to start the season with if we don't get anyone else in.

Why do we “require” six players in the in the next couple of weeks?
It was the Echo that suggested that six players were needed. Nobody at St Mary’s has expressed an intention to sign anything like that number.
They do have a professional scouting set-up at Southampton FC, the Echo obviously has no more idea than I do what they are doing at present: how many players they are targeting, who those players might be, nor what roles those players might be expected to fulfil should they be successfully recruited.
Letting the Echo dictate the agenda of these exchanges is dangerous, its reporters have a tendency to invent mysteries, wrap them in an enigma and then stand back and comment darkly on the concerns of the fans who have been duped into arguing about irrelevances.

I think to be fair the fans identified the need for three players. A striker to replace the absent Osvaldo and convert the chances. A CB with pace to partner Lovren. A keeper to compete with Boruc and give depth.

The only high quality depth we had was RB and defensive mid.

Good luck to our new signings tonight and some of the fringe players and I hope we play Lovren rather than keeping him on the margins. Maybe getting back to actually playing and feeling part of the group will give him a last minute change of heart. Doubt it, but if we have any aspirations of keeping him and if he's not on a complete sulk we should make him feel there is a road back.

For what it’s worth, I reckon we need four, but I am happy to say that I do not regard myself as any sort of expert. That said, I do not reckon that the Echo’s Saints’ coverage is particularly expert and most of the contributors to these threads have nothing like the background knowledge available to the Echo sports-desk staff.
There is a tendency on these forums for the blind to lead the blind in ever decreasing circles, and it worries me because in a couple of weeks time there will be people on the Echo forums demanding to know why Ralph Krueger and/or Les Reed and or Ronal Koeman have not signed the “promised” six recruits – all of them scoring unlikely thumb-ups tallies.

This will be a difficult match tonight for the Saints as Bournemouth are a good championship side with a talented Manager.
It could be really tight and if we win it will help the confidence and if we draw or lose it may help people realise that we need reinforcements. I don't think we should play Lovren unless he is committed to stay and I am not hearing that is the case. I can't make the match tonight does anyone know if it's on Radio Solent?

It’s a unique groundhog day you have losing your cherry most Saturdays. I seem to remember you having a chairman whose drinking habits surpassed the two pot screamer Delia Smith.
Eddie Howe certainly seems to be doing a good job for you again and I hope he gets you up into the prem. I would think he must have a wry smile looking back at his decision to leave Burnley, though if I remember rightly it was for family reasons.
Nothing wrong with Eddie Mitchell, just a misunderstood genius. (joke)
If his plan goes full course he could be entertaining Poopey in a couple of seasons at Poole Town.

Just hope we come out of it uninjured with full bragging rights.

I think most of us amateurs identify needs from what we watch on the pitch. The management make the actual decisions and will and should be judged on results.

Has anyone one seen this report in todays mirror?

"Virgil van Dijk is keen to play for his fellow Dutchman Ronald Koeman at Southampton.

The 23-year-old Celtic defender is also wanted by Sunderland and Swansea, but Van Dijk would prefer to work with the Saints' new boss."

It goes on to say we will make double the £10mill fee with the sale of Dejan to diverpooh.

Is he a good replacement for Dejan? Is he an equal or better talent? I only know what ive seen from the world cup and he looked good there. Genuinely just asking for opinions. Would it be better to have a player who wants to play for the manager or a better player who might be in a sulk?
Personally as much as I rate Dejan if his heads not in it I think we should sell him but outside of England. What about a swap deal with Celtic for forster and van dijk? That way Dejan can play in the champs league and he can enjoy 'you'llnever walk alone' sung by the Celtic fans, who I believe were the first to sing it!

Disloyal, mercenary, money grabbing bit part wonders should get their come-uppance when the time is right. Not that it really matters to them, it is water of a duck’s back. Kiss the badge one minute wipe their ar$e on it the next.

The show must go on and us fans always remain the permanent fixture, so let’s display the class.

Nice try horse, but we know it’s all about the money. The player power is out of control and they will go where they and their agent choose, not where the club proposes.
Virgil sounds F.A.B. to me though I confess I have no insight.

as ive said though I would love him to stay and try his best here, but I cant see him wanting to. its not enough to earn your place in the champs league anymore, players just want to go to teams that have qualified. why bother trying when you can just replace the players who put all the hard work in. I would like uefa to put a rule in that you can only add three players to your squad for the champs league that didn't qualify the year before!

By beating Bournemouth tonight and Brighton next Thursday I hope the board doesn't look at the results and conclude we don't need to buy anyone. According to the press Ron Vlaar, Jordy Clasie, Fraser Forster, Virgil van Dijk and John Guidetti are the names that Southampton have an interest in. Not too bothered about Fraser Forster for £10m as we can manage at the moment but need to replace like with like or better as RK promised.

Did you mean a CB with pace to partner Jose, don't think the other guy is staying for long.

Getting the new players in is clearly more difficult than Les Reed thought. However getting the right quality players is the important thing even if it does take all of the remaining 5 weeks until the window closes. Difficult to see us getting all the six we require in next couple of weeks in time for Liverhampton though.

Our allocation is sold out because we are a bigger club with a bigger fan base. You obviously haven't sold many because your a small club in a small town with a few fans.
My shed has got 4 walls hahaha

By beating Bournemouth tonight and Brighton next Thursday I hope the board doesn't look at the results and conclude we don't need to buy anyone. According to the press Ron Vlaar, Jordy Clasie, Fraser Forster, Virgil van Dijk and John Guidetti are the names that Southampton have an interest in. Not too bothered about Fraser Forster for £10m as we can manage at the moment but need to replace like with like or better as RK promised.
Even though we should beat them, the board would be crazy to think that, unless we beat them by a margin of say 10 nil. Even then we cannot rely on the current line up because there is too many holes with contingency players. I am hoping to see the quality bar exceeded with some defensive transfers in particular, and hopefully a couple of decent attacking players.

Have you woken up yet?
Yes thanks fully awake now and dammit we're still in the Championship!!
Hey-ho it's better than League1 so not complaining.
Looking forward to the game tonight it should be an interesting contest.
But your dreams of Premiership football are akin to a child proclaiming "when I grow up I want to be an astronaut".

You seem like a decent chap so good luck for this season!

Not this time Ted, seems our players have more faith in themselves than a lot of our fans. Not sure about that offside though!
