Targett hoping his Saints 'dream' comes true following Shaw's departure

MATT Targett is hoping his “dream” will come true this season when he gets the chance to play for Saints in the Premier League.

Saints could replace one 18-year-old England international with another in the top flight in 2014/15.

Following Luke Shaw’s departure to Manchester United, another academy lad, Targett, has been operating at left back in Saints’ pre season friendlies so far.

Targett, an England U19 international, said: “You hear the phrase all the time, but for me it really would be a dream come true.

“When Luke left it was a case of mixed emotions for me.

“Obviously I was sad to see him leave as he is a good friend and we’ve grown up together.

“But on the other hand I know it is a great opportunity to make that position my own.”

Targett knows Saints have an incredible record of nurturing and developing talented youngsters into world class professionals, none more so than at left-back.

“It’s inspirational to see what players like Gareth Bale and Luke Shaw have achieved,” he added in an interview with the Football Association’s website thefa.com.

“To see Gareth scoring in the final and winning the Champions League with one of the biggest clubs in the world was just incredible.

“I’ve been at the club since I was eight so I was here when Gareth was - and to see what he’s gone on to achieve is something very special.

“And that he started in my position too, it makes it even more inspirational.”

Ahead of Saints’ friendly at AFC Bournemouth tonight, Targett said: “At pre-season we do a lot more training than during the regular season.

“It can be quite intensive and we’re doing morning and evening sessions at the moment – but I’m really enjoying it.

“We do a lot of gym work and generally longer sessions on the training pitch, then as the season gets going it gradually eases off and you get into the routine of matches every few days.

“At this stage though it’s all about getting back into the swing of things and getting used to the tempo again.

“If you asked me what I’d be happy to have achieved this time next year then I would have hoped to have made my Premier League debut, to have got a few appearances under my belt – and then if I do well, potentially a call-up to the England U20s or even the Under-21s.

“I’m very excited about next season.”

Some optimism at last! Well done Daily Echo and well done Matt Targett!

I reckon that young Matt could turn out to be a better player than Luke Shaw, which might explain why Saints agreed to sell Luke.

Optimism, confidence and positive attitude are great assets. I am sure MT will have a great future for Saints, but not sure whether it will be next season. We should remember that we did really well last season, not because of the 'stars' but more because we addressed the 'weakest links in the team - notably Fox and Hoiveld, and to some extent K Davis and Guly...with Shaw, Lovren Boruc and Davis/ Wanyama. A team is only as strong as it's weakest link, and in 2012/13 we were exposed badly in LB / CB and GK...so looking ahead to 2014/15 we need to ensure that we bring through Matt when he is strong and ready and not enable teams to exploit and destroy (for his benefits, as well as the team's)

Maybe, just maybe as he's a local lad and his family are apparently big Saints fans, if he does develop into a top player, we may be able to keep him. That assumes, of course, we continue to improve.

With the money we have and a TOP EUROPEAN MANAGER everton fans should be looking over their shoulders as we compete in the League for a EUROPEAN PLACE - that is the AMBITION.

We MUST be difficult to beat - TARGETT must be exceptional to stop leaking goals at the back OR we must buy.

AT CB - we cannot leave it to chance - WE MUSTget in another CB for cover and competition and cannot be left with selling LOVREN and no replacement - Hoover clearly is not good enough and Jose is just about good enough.

WE HAVE a Top Striker and Cover .f we keep Osvaldo - unpopular as that may be.

WE CANNOT THROW away Points by not getting an additional Number One Keeper. COYR+WS

If he's good enough why not we had to take the chance with Shaw and it paid off. However we do need cover so just wondering if we buy a LB he can come in for cover and cup games.
Just saw the comments about Chambers and I hope it's a wind up. Also listening to talk sport they are saying its inevitable that Lovren will go. I sense from the conversation that we are beginning to look a laughing stock around the loss of so many players. Is there something fundamentally wrong inside the club or is it just part of being so successful last year!
I'm not moaning but either way it's difficult to keep motivated when all you hear is about players leaving and no one coming in. Yet all the other PL clubs are buying and strengthening their teams and if we are not going to have problems this season we need to see not just players but good players coming in that don't just plug the gap but improve the team.
People are saying that us Saints supporters have got used to the highs of last season. Yes that might be the case, but why shouldn't we want our team to progress send improve, isn't that what being a supporter is all about?
Maybe I am having an off day but as a season ticket holder I can't help being concerned . Besides that I just don't like people taking the p----s out of our team.

I don't know if we can be considered a 'laughing stock' for losing a few players - if so, then so are Atletico Madrid, who seem to be selling all their players too.

It's more to do with how successful both Saints and Atletico were last season, performing above expectation and not having built the long-term 'reputation' needed to keep hold of our key players.

If we can maintain a level of success (a la Everton) over a few years, players are more likely to stick about because there won't be the fear of us being 'one season wonders'.

As for buying players, it's a similar problem (and solution). However, I think some people are overstating our 'failures' in this department. A number of PL teams are struggling to get high calibre recruits in (just look at Poyet's recent comments - and no I'm not suggesting we should be aiming to be as unsuccessful as Sunderland, but it just shows that it's not easy for teams to dip into the market without throwing ridiculous wages about, like QPR and West Ham are).

I hope that this young lad proves to be as good if not better than LS . However; until such times as the FA pass a ruling that protects clubs like ours from being continualy ransacked in the transfer market, I feel he will proably follow his pal away to bigger club.

The ruling should be, that if a player has come through a clubs academy after being at that academy four four years or more, that player cannot be sold to another Premier League club until he reaches the age of 22. This would enable a club who has spent years developing this player to reap the rewards for the time and effort they had put into him.

Since however the FA seem to prefer a cartel of clubs to boss the premiership and are happy to see the other 15 clubs merely making up the numbers.....this type of ruling will never be implimented. I hope this lad is another star player in the making and one who will make his future with SFC, history tells me, i'll probably be bitterly dissapointed; fortunately for us though..... there is always hope.

It's like a scene from a spaghetti Western, with rumour after rumour rolling down Main Street like so much tumbleweed, while the townsfolk (that's us) are holed up in the saloon, nervously awaiting news, desperately aware that supplies are running low, while vultures (Rodgers, Wenger and the one they call El Argentinian) circle overhead. Suddenly, there's a hollering and a whooping as the cry goes up, "reinforcements are coming!" The townsfolk flood out into the street and, indeed, on the distant horizon, a cloud of dust signals the approach of three men on horseback, Sheriff Ron, Deputy Les and Mayor Ralph ( sometimes dubbed The Good, The Bad and The Ugly). The Sheriff dismounts, tethers his weary steed, and addresses the expectant crowd. "I have a plan, he says triumphally. There is a murmur of anticipation as Les and Ralph, still mounted but not yet stuffed, smile knowingly at each other. " Watcha goin' to do Sheriff?" a young whippersnapper pipes up. Big Ron beams and from his saddlebags produces two tins, one marked 'hope' and the other marked 'prayer'. "We're going to paint the town ORANGE!!" he announces, at which the gathered populous roar their approval, while at the same time keeping their fingers firmly crossed behind their backs. THE END.

COYR+WS
it's being reported that Osvaldo is being signed by Inter Milan - Sad to see it all end in this manner, if he hadn't been such a mental tosser he and Saints could've been good for each other. Lovren all but gone it appears. Can't wait to see what the money for those two can bring in.
Lovren's departure is apparently subject to a medical. I hope the Liverhampton doctor doesn't have problems with Lovren having curvature of the spine from headupbottyitis!

Tossvaldo being got rid of should free up more money towards the acquision of more new Saints.

Lovren and (hopefully) Tossvaldo departing is turning today into a good day.

Up the Saints!!!

Right on the button...particularl
y the bit about 'reputation' onwards. It was always going to happen from the time the first one 'jumped ship'.
What worries me is that the so-called brains? running the outfit didn't see this exodus coming and make any attempt to nip it in the bud. They could have made a statement of ambition praps even by making an early 'big' signing (albeit on the strength of a couple of inevitable departures)
and might have kept a lid on it. We might still get away with it, but the last thing you want is the richest club in the championship desperately haemorrhaging money on second rate players. I'm sure it's not all the boards fault, but whoever it is I'd like to thank them for turning last year's dream into a friggin nightmare!!!
