Osvaldo departure could see two new faces coming in

Saints could bag themselves a two for the price of one bargain as they attempt to shift bad boy Dani Osvaldo.

As previously reported in the Daily Echo, Inter Milan are closing in on a deal to take Osvaldo on a season long loan deal with an option to make the move permanent for around €7m (£5.5m).

That would obviously be a huge loss on the club record initial fee of £12.9m that was paid out for the Italian international striker last summer, but does get his significant wages off the books for another season.

Saints are also using him as a makeweight to bring in new signings, offsetting the loss in his value with Ronald Koeman’s need for new faces.

They are hopeful of tying up a deal to sign 22-year-old Algerian midfielder Saphir Taider, main picture, on similar terms, with a season long loan and option to buy for around €7m (£5.5m).

On top of that, sources close to Inter suggest that Saints could also work another loan into the equation and bag Ezequiel Schelotto too.

That would be with a buy out option of around €5m (£3.9m).

Both Taider and Schelotto are well thought of international midfielders.

Taider, who starred for Algeria at the World Cup, having opted to represent them at international level despite being born in France and having played for Les Blues at youth level, is an attacking midfielder.

He started his career with Grenoble before quickly being snapped up by Serie A side Bologna.

However, his talents were such that it didn’t take long for the giants of Italian football to become interested, with Inter Milan paying €5.5m last summer to bring him to the San Siro.

Taider has held talks over his future with Inter, who are keen to convince him to make the move to Saints.

Schelotto was born in Argentina but has won one full cap for Italy, against England in 2012.

Like Taider, he is also an attacking midfielder, who has even been nicknamed ‘The Greyhound’ thanks to his speed.

Schelotto started his career at Cesena before moving to Atalanta. From there he had loan spells back at Cesena and also Catania before his switch to Inter.

However, he has struggled to make a first team breakthrough and spent last season on loan at Sassuolo and then at Parma.

He scored five goals in 27 games for the two clubs.

Have you a self set time limit on spending all the money? Would you be happier if we carelessly blew the lot now, spurs style, or sensibly spent it over a longer period to gradually grow. What would make you happy? Getting two decent players in a swap for Osvaldo is good news isn't it?

The Italian media are also saying that we could get Hugo Campagnaro from them on similar terms; an initial season-long loan with an option to buy. We would have mugged of Inter Milan if true. Also, Schelotto is naturally a winger so would give us depth in that position.

I also remember the 'We'll spend every penny of the monies received' quote, but there should be tooo much of a rush to spend cash, so long as deals are done, and players are right quality.

It worries me that bringing in too many players too quickly doesn't work - sunderland/spurs. I 'm not worried, so long as side is strengthened adequately, and funds are used in the next couple of transfer windows

What Ralph actually said was that all the money from players sales will be spent on "transfer fees and wages". In other words, he can fulfil his promise by using the £90 million to bankroll this season's wage bill, without buying many (any?) more players outright.

Like so Di Canio? As it happens I agree, which is why loans (when in cuts our losses on Os) is a smart idea I think. If it was in any other situation, I agree. What's weird is that the Italian league is so massively different that it's actually players they don't rate (not Mario, Gaston, Aquillani, Osvaldo) who do well. We'll see. With the amount of faces we've lost, making up numbers for free with promising players, then investing well in more sure-fire players is a decent call IMO.

Question - did Ralph actually say we would spend every penny received from outgoing transfers? Or, did he say every penny would be available to spend? Two very different statements! Also, it's all very well saying go out and buy a couple of top players for, say £25 million each, but would players commanding those sort of numbers, want to come to St Mary's? I'd like to think so, but in truth the answer is likely to be no.

...and that is "exactly" what is happening! The quote also stated that "all the monies will be used to buy new players and for player wages". These loan deals are a bonus. I believe that we will complete deals on at least 5 or 6 more new signings (around £5m to £10m each on average), including the 3 that RonKo believes are immenent. I also think it is likely that there will be at least one bigger name involved. We have been associated with a whole host of players and obviously some of these are pure rumours, others are genuine interest and some are near to conclusion. I like the way some deals (mostly loans so far but there will be other, I'm sure) have been missed by the media and surprised us all. With 5+ loan deals and another 5+ players to be bought (many Dutch) we will not only plug all the gaps in our first team but we will have considerably strengthened our overall squad. RonKo will get them to adjust and gel quickly and has the skills to get the very best out of them. I truly believe that we will finish in the top 10 again and possibly push on above 8th place. I also believe that RonKo is in for the long haul and many (but not all) of the players will remain loyal to him and the club, thus avoiding a repeat of this summer's exodus next summer. Yes, some of the loan deals will be temporary but many of these will have a buy option for later on. We will be building a strong core, a highly competitive first team and a much more sustainable squad and all that before we benefit from more highly promising academy players coming on stream. We ARE a very ambitious club and the board deserve credit for appointing RonKo and their forward thinking and planning. They are doing it in their special way and despite of the wholly unfair FFP rules. Wenger said Saints could have been winners of the Champions League if we had kept all our players from Bale onwards but small clubs cannot hold onto their players. That is true but our new formula gives us every chance of solving that conundrum. Many of you will feel that I am being naively optimistic. Just watch this unfold.
[p][bold]Sammy2sheds[/bold] wrote: "We will spend every penny from player sales " We haven't forgotten Ralph.[/p]
...and that is "exactly" what is happening! Have you a self set time limit on spending all the money? Would you be happier if we carelessly blew the lot now, spurs style, or sensibly spent it over a longer period to gradually grow. What would make you happy? Getting two decent players in a swap for Osvaldo is good news isn't it?
Two decent players? You know nothing of them at all.you think inter would let them go if they really rated them.yes I would like us to buy experienced epl players before the opening game.didnt les have them banging down his door a while ago?

Here you go yet again, putting good players and good deals down. You look at ancient examples to try to make your negative case. Taider's more recent form has been much more impressive. Go to the Sky - Sempre Inter blog on the Southampton News site. This post had 5 comments (when I last looked at 13.40) all from Inter fans who are all really unhappy to see Taider go. It is the Inter board who are making the bad decision. RonKo knows what he's doing and this an excellent deal for Saints. A loan with an option to buy. We cannot lose on this one. RonKo will get the best out of him. He may well initially be used as a squad player with occasional appearances as a sub but with every chance that he'll break through into the first team and become a regular. When we've finished all our new signings and hirings there is going to be some healthy competition for some of the first team places. Even when there is much better news around, you try to reject it all. Quite honestly, I am totally fed up with your gross and thoroughly unjustified negativity.

When are we getting another striker? A striker who has a shot every time he has the ball and can see the goal, and can get his shots on target with power. We do not want a striker who's main skill is laying the ball of to someone else. We had too much of that last year. With regards to Sam Gallagher, I did not think that he got a fair chance when he was brought on. There were quite a few times when Llanna and company ignored him when he had run into an unmarked position with a chance of shooting at goal. He was never going to get an opportunity to out-star the "stars". Personally I am glad that they have gone and maybe Koeman can build a team where individual's skills are appreciated and used by all members of the team for the team

Hey SaintJD,

The thumbs up tally what some people use to boost their own agenda is the old refresh button. Really easy in Firefox or any browser and takes about 30 seconds. When your on Daily Echo comment page, open a new tab, delete cookies in tools menu, go back to Daily Echo page and press refresh you are now able to give yourself as many thumbs up/down as you want. It's not clever. LOL.

I don't want to appear negative about this, it's good to see new signings coming in, and we may have got a good financial deal, but after having a cursory research on Taider and Schelotto, they do appear to be quite average based on hard facts. Schelotto more so. They are still young however, and my hope is that they are a good fit in our team. I still believe we certainly have the justification for some higher quality players. It's time to get players where we need them most. The midfield has a lot of players now.

53 thumbs up? You have been busy. I wouldn't normally bother speaking to an imbecile like you but I work with mental health and you make an interesting case study. A troll is a relatively new branch of mental health and I'm intrigued. Why do you do it?
If you work in mental health you should know that you must keep an open mind.have you ever thought I may not be doing the thumbs up? I can assure I am not but someone is and it is working.people blame me.
I give my opinion on here and my view is not shared by many.some posters on here attacked me when I first came on this site and I have a pop at them now and again, but that is normal retaliatory behaviour.
You shouldn't really use the term imbecile when you work with mentally ill people.are you a cleaner at a mental home then ?
Imbecile was used to be offensive to you, I have no duty of care to you. Just interested for scientific purposes what makes someone so demented they spend so much of their time trolling and going to such lengths to create various logins. Never mind, carry on, it's your life you're wasting.
Scientific purposes? Something tells me you're not working in mental health at all.are you the cleaner at a nut house?

Are you from Salem?

Trying to figure out why you are perpetually trying to start a witch hunt.
What? You happy with average loanees? I am just making sure people don't forget the promise because since our one loan signing some posters have been celebrating and shouting from the rooftops.we are still in a shambles and have had a disrupted and unsettled pre season.we will now have foreign journeymen players coming in which will not help.
Or should we just not say what we think and post comments like "nearly beer o clock" "Ron's red revolution" "in Ron we trust".eh Barry?
"average" !? you clearly know absolutely nothing about football....
Yeah average.you think Milan are stupid.you had never heard of either of these players so don't come the tommy tough nuts with me.you know why you had never heard of them? Because they are average.you know nothing about football and you are happy with anything the club serves up.you can't polish a turd glue face
Sammy 2 shids...you know so much about football that you keep calling Inter, "Milan"!!

And when the Saints are dun with acquiring all these foreign players who nobody in England has ever heard of (probably has-beens, that's why their clubs are getting rid of them) to add to the foreign players already here (who we wish we'd never heard of) -then we will have yet another foreign team playing in the English Premier League.
There has to be a rule limiting the number of foreign players playing in our teams. If it's an English team playing in an English league then there should be no less than 8 players eligible to play for England in that team.
Saints were on the right track, but now . . . Oh, I despair!!!
