Former Saints striker Rickie Lambert fails with his first spot-kick for Liverpool

RICKIE LAMBERT

RICKIE LAMBERT

First published in Sport

RICKIE Lambert, the man who never missed a penalty for Saints, failed with his first spot-kick for Liverpool last night.

The striker converted all 34 of his competitive spot-kicks during his remarkable five years at St Mary’s.

But he failed to score his first penalty for Liverpool when he saw his effort during last night’s 2-0 friendly win over AC Milan saved by Christian Abbiati.

The Reds still won 2-0 in Charlotte, America, with goals from Joe Allen and Suso.

I'm a lifelong Saints fan and it was very brave of you to come on here! You surely would expect to get some verbal and thumbs down from other posters? Actually, like many of us Saints fans, I wished Rickie every success for his new club. He handled his transfer very professionally (unlike the others you bought from us), he was genuine in thanking our club for the time he had spent with us and he provided excellent service for us during the last 5 years but even if he had stayed, he would have found that he would be starting fewer games and often only coming on as a sub. He is several years past his prime but can still unsettle defenses. As for the penalty, yes it was a surprise but you are right, he did hit it quite well and it was a fine save. In fact, from the video of it, it looks like the keeper moved quite a long way before Rickie kicked the ball. In the EPL there would have a reasonable chance that the ref would have had the penalty re-taken. So unlucky for Rickie and you guys but you must understand the pleasure most of us will get from this irony - 34 out of 34 for SFC and 0 out of 1 for LFC. Now let us focus on our new signings.

When he missed that PK the first thing I thought was he would have buried that if he was playing for us. Ah well bitter sweet really I could care less for LFC, I fu##ing hate them almost as much as MU, but I kinda wanted Ricky to do well.
Judging from what I saw last night Liverpool are still way of the mark with that team. Southampton are playing much better football even with a lot of last seasons players gone.
Now! lets get shot of Osvaldo ( has he not gone yet ????), get Taider in, because if Morgan does leave, he would be a tiger in midfield, and close the deals on whoever else is on Koeman's hit list. Be interesting to see if Morgan plays against Bayer 04 Leverkusen on Sat.

I already think that! In fact I felt at the time of each transfer it was way over the top. Overall, almost double a sensible level! We asked for these ridiculous prices to discourage the vultures but the fools still went for them!!! Do you actually believe what you're saying? The only thing worse than a greedy footballer is a fickle fan. I think your gripe is with players who were on year 2 of 4-5 year contracts, particularly those who the Academy had spent years and years developing who jumped at the first opportunity. Not a Liverpudlian at the end of his career who mightn't even have featured for us next season.

Could it possibly be a case of mistaken identity, kasapis? Are you absolutely certain the guilty party is Rickie Lambert, that flawless penalty taker when he was playing for Saints?

Might the real culprit have been Dejan Lovren, doing his failed impersonation of a professional footballer, but who has left his shooting foot in Southampton???

I'm starting to wonder if Lovren's head is already dreaming of playing for Real Madrid or Barcelona, as it must be so distressing for him to have suddenly found out that so many of Liverhampton's team are players he thought he had left behind at SFC. Lovren reckoned that his head was already in Liverhampton, so he obviously had no idea that any of them had even been transferred! We Saints fans know different, however. The truth of the matter is that his head was very firmly stuck up his own backside!

Saints forever!!!

"Soufampton," eh? Thanks for your tip about it being a malicious, gloating place. I'll be sure to avoid that place you call "Soufampton" and instead stay, as usual, in sunny Southampton, home of Southampton Football Club.

What are "left overs?" I have heard only of leftovers, commonly known as bubble and squeak.

Your one consolation is that you probably know all there is to know about gristle!!!

There is no hope for some. I know, because I have to suffer my 2 sons support them, sympathy please.

At least, they don't speak with an accent which I really, quite often, cannot understand. Need sub-titles for some interviews!
You stand accused of dereliction of your paternal duties, where do you live, FFS?
Sir, I'm reporting you to the relevant child care agencies.
Call yourself a Saint.

Oh, by the way, I thought you could hit the penalty hard and it's a goal.
Goalkeeper stops it, that's a save and a miss. Excepting, of course, in the case of Matt Le Tiss, where the goalkeeper had technically fouled, on the grounds of Matty being a lifetime Saint.
Just to clarify, as some people don't seem to know the protocol: as a Saints fan you should glory in anyone wearing an opposition shirt missing, particularly an ex-player. The only exclusion is when the team they are playing are more despised, and this then becomes opinion, so people do often get this wrong, in my opinion.

If SRL was such a good guy -and I tend to think he was- I wonder whether in hindsight he regrets his move, when it appears he was the 'Trojan Horse' for all that has followed? Probably not, because the 'regime' (and some of the fanbase) did appear to want him away earlier in the season anyway, and he's got a better deal than he expected previously.

I think he may have sneaked into our team later on, besides, his penalty record is..................
