  • "When you watch your club sell a plethora of first team players, naturally you become a little bit anxious about when replacements will arrive.

As far as Southampton are concerned, the fanbase is taking that anxiety to a new level, wondering quite when the board will spend even a small proportion of it’s vast profits this summer. Despite talk of being hopeful that two or three players would be coming in over the last weekend, it is now Tuesday morning and no new faces have arrived at the club.

Algerian midfielder Saphir Taïder looks set to arrive today on loan from Inter Milan as part of Dani Osvaldo’s long awaited move, but does that even count?

Since Graziano Pelle arrived at the club over three weeks ago, only Ryan Bertrand has come in (also on loan), and people are beginning to wonder if the board have any intention of spending any more money at all. Taïder looks to be a by-product of getting shot of Osvaldo and plays in the one position we need no cover in whatsoever.

Worryingly paper talk of incoming players has switched from big money moves to that of loans and free transfers and it is perfectly understandable to think that Saints have either completely blown this transfer window, struggling to convince players to join while everyone else leaves and being priced out of moves with clubs and agents knowing they have cash on the hip or the alternative. The alternative is even worse.

The alternative is that the board completed their spending on Dusan Tadic and Pelle and will now backfill the squad with loans and out of contract players in the hope that it will placate the supporters while they arrange their extremely lucrative exit from the club.

Either way, the speed at which transfers for players exiting the club can be completed seems to be a hell of a lot quicker than for those coming in and the fanbase is becoming restless. The chairman’s promises of having a great team come the start of the season look to be pretty hollow right now, and if his statement that the club is not for sale was honest then they need to start spending. Otherwise the board run the risk of losing the backing of the fans.

TOTTENHAM have reportedly offered Romanian defender Vlad Chiriches to Saints as a makeweight in any deal to sign Morgan Schneiderlin.

Spurs only signed the 24-year-old centre half from Steaua Bucharest last summer for £8.5m, and he went on to play 24 times for the London club in all competitions.

There is also speculation today that Louis Van Gaal will consider selling striker Javier Hernandez.

The Mexican international has continually been linked with Saints all summer, even before Ronald Koeman’s arrival as manager.

The 26-year-old has scored 37 Premier League goals for United in 48 starts plus 53 sub appearances in his four seasons at Old Trafford.
