As a Saints fan for 49 yrs I am excited by this season...Players always leave, albeit not usually so many in one go. ( I think there was a huge amount of indoctrination by Cortese and with his press connections things just spiralled).
    New SEASON...
I would be pleased to see the following team start |( if we can get the Celtic 2 )
    Forster ( understudy Boruc/Davis )

    Clyne ( ) Fonte, ( Yoshida) Van Dyk ( Hooiveld) Bertrand(Targett)

    Wanyama ( )

Dusan ( Taider) , Davis ( WP), Cork( Reed),
Ramirez ( Jayrod / Mc Queen)
    Pelle ( Gallagher )

    Not included Morgan.
With all due respect and a want to be positive, I don't think that's a particularly pleasing starting eleven.

Obviously, if that's what we've got, that's what we've got, and it's a good selection from what we've got, but...

Surely you aim to improve season on season. Surely the board have said they still have European ambitions. And surely that starting eleven is the same as last year with three untried players in for our three best players, JWP in for Spider, and an as yet unproven, injury prone player (Ramirez) in for Jay-Rod.

Add to that even less cover for injuries at the back and in attack (where we needed more cover in the first place regardless of sales) and the fact is we need to do much more.

Hoover shouldn't even be making the bench, even if we were only aiming mid-table. Yoshida is going to have to step up his performances and concentration to levels we've not seen yet if he's to be good enough as cover.

Let's not let the clean sheets in pre-season paper over the cracks, we need serious investment in the squad.

Upfront alone we've lost our proven 15 goals a season striker and Jay Rod is injured - about 25 goals missing overall at the start of the season.

We've lost Osvaldo and Guly has left also, Sharp is clearly not in our plans. We currently have Pelle and Sam as viable options.

So on that basis we need at least two more strikers of very high quality (and that's at the very least based on departures), probably three.

If we are aiming for Europe that would mean buying the likes of Ings in replacement of Guly, not Rickie. For Rickie we'd need top, top proven quality.

This isn't negative, it's just the facts of our squad againt our supposed aspirations, which have been set by Ralph. He set the aspirations, he sanctioned the sales, so he should know what's needed."

TOTTENHAM have reportedly offered Romanian defender Vlad Chiriches to Saints as a makeweight in any deal to sign Morgan Schneiderlin.

Spurs only signed the 24-year-old centre half from Steaua Bucharest last summer for £8.5m, and he went on to play 24 times for the London club in all competitions.

There is also speculation today that Louis Van Gaal will consider selling striker Javier Hernandez.

The Mexican international has continually been linked with Saints all summer, even before Ronald Koeman’s arrival as manager.

The 26-year-old has scored 37 Premier League goals for United in 48 starts plus 53 sub appearances in his four seasons at Old Trafford.
