Saints are reportedly tracking Lazio midfielder Alvaro Gonzalez.
Gonzalez, who is also attracting interest from other clubs, played in all four of Uruguay’s games at the World Cup.
Lazio, who are looking to strengthen in central defence, could cash in on the 29-year-old to free up funds for a defender.
Gonzalez has 47 international caps.
Meanwhile, Arsene Wenger is reportedly weighing up whether to play Calum Chambers in a midfield holding role for the new season.
The Arsenal boss has been impressed by the former Saints player’s adaptability since joining the Gunners and Chambers could feature in a central role against Manchester City in the Community Shield on Sunday.
