Ronald Koeman will field his strongest side as Saints finish their pre-season friendlies against Bayer Leverkusen at St Mary’s today.

The Saints manager is hoping for more new signings to arrive before the season kicks-off at Liverpool a week tomorrow, but, aside from the absent Morgan Schneiderlin, will be giving his current first choice side a run out.

“Yes, you saw in the building up in the pre-season little by little you give a little bit more open what you like to do, or what the starting list is in the squad, and this is the same,” said Koeman.

“I would like to have the same ambition in the team, the same structure how we played, how we are doing our training sessions, and it’s the toughest opponent in the whole pre-season and we will see. But I have confidence in the team from what I saw this pre-season and we have to be ready for next week.

“The Germans are always tough to beat, they are always physically strong. I think it’s a good friendly, it’s a good test in the last friendly.”

There is still much work to do before the opener at Anfield and Koeman, who was asked whether his side were ready for that test yet, smiled: “You never know, because it’s the same question for Liverpool, it’s the same question for Man United, it’s the same question for all the teams.

“We are doing our pre-season, a lot of teams travel a lot, we had normally a more quiet pre-season. We did good physical training, we did good exercises, I think this is a good test. We are ready for Liverpool, yes.”

He added: “From the beginning, the ambience was great between them in the squad, in the team and, of course, always you have some moments in the pre-season what we had – we lost some players, some good players – but little by little we brought in new players and they saw the qualities of the new ones and the signing from Jose, all these kind of things together brings good ambition, a good feeling for the new season.”

May I point out that it is a fact that most people find it difficult to read an item when everything is in capital letters. Capital letters best used to emphasise a point.

I am not being critical but making a helpful comment - I hope!

With you on that. What happened to us this summer happens all the time in football but, the secret is to replace take a deep breath and get on with it. We are still chasing the players we need but rome was'nt built in a day.
A good test today and with a good result it may persuade the players we need eager too join our great club. Show up, make a noise and get behind Big Ron.

Lets hope for a draw today...a win i feel would be a huge bonus. Seldom have any team in the premiership had to cope with such massive changes in a squad. As many have said it was of our own making being so successful last season. The big boys were always going to be hunting. Its a new start a new team and a new manager. Some across the country will be writing us off already. Both fans and pundits. Lets hope we can prove them wrong. Good luck lads today and for the new season.

Just to put things into perspective.. We are playing around £10m for a goalkeeper who is 3rd choice for his country who are currently in 20th place in the rankings, one below Bosnia and Herzegovina.
He has been playing for the dominating side in the Scottish Premier League where in some matches he hardly gets to touch the ball, let alone make a save.
Don't get me wrong, I welcome Forster to our club and It will be good to have 2 decent keepers ...although keeping them both happy could cause difficulties, but at £10m, we have overpaid just a little?

I hear what you're saying Gaz and you're right but if we wanted him that's the going price for him and we have to shell it out or look elsewhere. Ruddy would've been a good choice but I doubt we'd get much change from 10m for him either. Jack Butland might have come in a lot cheaper but he is inexperienced.

Just happy we have somebody of quality in.

I heard this comment last night that £10m was too much. I notice there is a sell-on clause with Newcastle in a similar way Bournemouth had one with us and Lallana that meant we pushed the fee up as Celtic clearly have with Forster.

hmmm, what is Koeman's best first team available right now.. I'll have a stab.. Boruc, Clyne, Fonte, Yoshida, Bertrand, Wanyama, Cork, Davis, Taider, Tadic, Pelle. Subs used from - Ramirez, Ward-Prowse, Gallagher, Targett, Hooiveld an all others..

The selection will be interesting. We have a decent midfield even without Schneiderlin it's the defence that worries me. With Hoover or Yoshida playing we will leak goals.
Looking forward to the game today. Let's get behind the team and vent our complaints elsewhere

Fellow saints lets all get behind the team, the board and the new management for what is the start of a new beginning.
Well said... been a Saints supporter since Third Div 3 South when I could just about get my nose on the railing at the old Archers Road at the Dell .. .seen a bit since then, the good the bad and the ugly . But it history now just like the going on's in the last few weeks . Let all True SAINTS supporters now get behind RK and all the back room boys and of course the Players.

Gaston needs to be wanted, I think he will feel that with no Lala and a more forward role with fast midfielders he can shine...

I think Ward Prowse should start. Been there all preseason. Taider just joined last week. And agree with those saying this could be Gaston's chance to step up and break out. A great talent we've all seen. Needs to strengthen up and start producing.
