United join race for Saints target

Manchester United have reportedly lodged a bid for Saints target Marcos Rojo, with the Sporting Lisbon defender said to have handed in a transfer request as he bids to force a move to Old Trafford.

Saints boss Ronald Koeman last week confirmed an interest in the 24-year-old, who was part of the Argentina squad that reached the final of this summer’s World Cup.

However, United are now widely reported to have entered the race to sign the player, who can play at the heart of defence or at left-back.

Rojo is also reported to have handed in a transfer request, as he wishes to join Louis van Gaal’s team.

Saints are already closing in on another replacement for Dejan Lovren, with Steaua Bucharest defender Florin Gardos set to complete his move this week.

Saints need to keep their dealings away from the media, ONLY then will they keep the sniffer dogs at bay. They lose out so many times when they go joe public.

Was never going to happen after his world cup, shame we didn't go for him before.

I'm hoping we have all the proper targets in place before the West Brom game, if we get anything from Liverpool away it'll be a bonus.

It is the players agents who inform the press not the football club.

I think that Saints have been "trying" to conduct most of their business in private, perhaps more so than some other EPL clubs. The Rojo case was not only very complex (with the 3rd party owners being involved) but the player's agent seemingly leaking stories at regular intervals to the Portuguese press which our media then picked up and reported on. There has apparently been a huge attempt to increase the price and the interest. Although we should not believe any rumours until definite club statements are made, this deal's twists and turns beggars belief! No point in getting excited or disappointed on this one until a deal is confirmed with us, ManU, L'pool or Accrington Stanley! Leaked stories are now prevalent in most walks of life. With the millions of £s involved in football player transfers, may be some much tighter regulations can be brought in, especially in respect of agents' behaviour. How could this be enforced I do not know. The greed is everywhere and with agent's usually on fat % fees they will continue to do all they can to manipulate deals.

This just proves why it is vital to complete deals quickly so you don't lose out. Although in the case of Rojo i'm not sure his attitude is what we want at Saints. I hope Reed will learn from this and conduct deals quicker

Why are we being reported as having bid £12m for Shane long..strikes as desperation. We need a goal sscorer but he is not the answer...ings or Joel Campbell would surely be better starting point. We have money and we have ambition so let's use it wisely to bring In quality not just quantity or desperation. If Stoke are offering £5m for redmond can't we match that? Looking forward to the football starting
