Billy Sharp has completed his move from Saints to Leeds.

Saints have also received an undisclosed fee for the striker, reported to be around £450,000, as Sharp moves to Elland Road on a two-year deal.

The 28-year-old striker joined for £1.8m in January 2012 but has had a string of loan spells.

Sharp was signed by Nigel Adkins at the very end of the transfer window in January 2012, the pair having previously worked together at Scunthorpe.

The striker, who started his career at Sheffield United, was recruited to provide extra firepower as Saints tried to press home their advantage and secure promotion from the Championship.

He delivered exactly that as Sharp plundered nine goals in just 15 appearances to help Saints climb back into the Premier League.

However, his joy was short lived as promotion proved to be the death knell for his chances at Saints.

Since then Sharp has been overlooked by successive managers, figuring just twice for Saints in the top flight.

He spent the 2012/13 season on loan at Nottingham Forest before last season splitting his time between Reading and Doncaster.

It is understood that a number of clubs have already enquired about Sharp’s availability and the news that he could leave on a free is sure to trigger a rush to secure his services before the transfer window closes.

Sharp’s career stats show a striker who has scored 146 goals in 341 appearances while even at Saints, where chances have been limited, he has notched ten goals in 18 appearances.

Good luck mate.

I always felt that Billy could have done an important job for us, but clearly things weren't working out that way and strikers have to find their place in life while still relatively young.

It was staggering to me that Guly got games but Sharp didn't. He is dangerous when played through and strong on the ball -- there were plenty of times when we needed that last season when Rickie was recovering from his England adventures, and we had that lean period over Christmas. Would have been worth recalling him a few times.

I think Les Reed & the board are starting to panic as I feared.

They are spending over £12m for Long and selling Sharp for £450k.
They are both a similar age and I would argue that they are a similar quality.
I am sure that given the chance Billy Sharp would have scored 5 to 8 goals in a whole season just as Shane Long has done.

Reality is that neither are good enough.

It would have been better to take a punt on Danny Ings rather than waste £12m on a player only worth half that.

Come on Les, don't waste the money you MUST sign BETTER quality players to improve the 11 on the pitch.

Have you seen Shane Long play? He has pace and causes defences repeated problems. I'm sorry but Billy Sharp is not similar at all. Some supporters moan whatever the club do.

On a brighter note, good luck Billy. A good move for both clubs and the player.

Yes Costa I was, although I feared the money would be wasted, I did believe that Ralph & Les were going to be signing BETTER players, but they are clearly not doing so.

Rupert Lowe made that mistake when he declared that he had signed one of the biggest squads in the league, but none were better that what we already had, so the 11 on the pitch never improved.

If you were at the game last Saturday you must agree that whilst each of the new players did OK (early days I know) none of them looked to be as good as the ones they have replaced.

I fear that Morgan & J-Rod will see this and will push to move on.

The club can't seem to please some supporters.

We are all football managers aren't we. Although fortunately Ronald Koeman is the man who is in charge and I personally think he would have a far better idea than me.

From what I have seen in our friendlies (including last weekend) the new players are steadily settling into the team. Let's give we very team member time to settle and to prove themselves. I believe we have made some very good signings. Whilst some may want the marque signing, we did this last year with Osvaldo, it isn't always a route to success.

We are very lucky to have a very experienced and respected coaching team, their collective knowledge is worth more than mine and so I will leave it to them!

In Koeman I trust.

I know why they have a problem, we have been under constant attack from the Press for whatever reason, too many believe all of the tripe that has been reported, and our own neggies aren't helping the cause a jot. The Club itself, is sound in most respects, we weren't eighth last season, through luck. We may have lost a few greedy so called stars, but are gradually pulling things together and you cannot deny we have a very talented Manager who knows what he is doing and knows what he wants to do, he just has the difficult job of persuading the right players to come and enjoy the ride, it could be a good one. I am a bit upset that Luke is on the injured list, I was hoping to see how well he would do, I don't care what the others do, except maybe Rickie.

Surely you don't need that explained ?[/p][/quote]I know why they have a problem, we have been under constant attack from the Press for whatever reason, too many believe all of the tripe that has been reported, and our own neggies aren't helping the cause a jot. OSPREYSAINT

Am I alone in feeling a little uneasy about this? I'm happy to have Long in the squad and though 12-5m raised my eyebrows if that is what we have to pay then so be it. though I feel it's about 4-5m more than he's worth. Then we move on a good workmanlike striker for next to nowt who I'm not convinced is not up to the job.
The managers are the experts and they will usually get it right but I have my doubts on this one.

NC, you were in the happy clappers camp only a few weeks ago..
They could do no wrong.. fair play in admitting you were wrong, there should be more like you hats off to you sir.
Have you seen Shane Long play? He has pace and causes defences repeated problems. I'm sorry but Billy Sharp is not similar at all. Some supporters moan whatever the club do.

On a brighter note, good luck Billy. A good move for both clubs and the player.

He can, but I suspect we couldn't afford the Insurance Premium on his legs.

Another £ 450 k that won't be used to get decent players to replace those that left Saints. It will join all the other money that has been taken out of the club.

" ABANDON ALL HOPE, YE WHO ENTER HERE " you don't stand a chance this season due to your incompetent management , who shouldn't be in charge of a Premier League club.

Roll on Sunday, any bets as to the score.

Billy is a lovely guy, but lets be realistic- he hasn't looked good enough in pre season, successive managers haven't deemed him good enough, and his loan spells in a lower league weren't roaring successes.
He had a good record in the lower leagues, but not the pace or skill unfortunately to be in our team.
And Shane Long, whilst over priced at 12 million, has bags of pace, works hard for the team, and is a 'busy' player, meaning he's going to fit our style of play perfectly, will provide an outlet to help Pelle, will chip in with a few goals, but more importantly be the link we have lacked. He might not be an exciting signing, or score for fun, but a team is just that - a group working in unison, and I see him being as vital, yet unheralded, and Steven Davis has proved.

Gaz can't do facts and figures. He thinks the negs are 7-4 up (7-5 now that Long has signed). I've been adding it up this way and that way but just can't see where he gets his stats from.

Anyway, good luck Billy. The dignified way that you and your family have struggled with your personal loss is an example to us all.
