Saints have completed the signing of Steaua Bucharest centre-half Florin Gardos.

The 25-year-old has agreed a four-year contract with the club, and joins in a deal worth about £6m, becoming the seventh arrival of the summer.

He is also the second capture of the afternoon at St Mary's, following the signing of Hull striker Shane Long in a £12.5m move.

In a club statement, Saints manager Ronald Koeman said: "I am very happy to have Florin here.

"He’s still a young player so he can develop himself a lot more, and that’s part of the ambition of Southampton

"From the beginning, after [Dejan] Lovren left the club, we paid a lot of attention to Florin.

"Everybody knows the big names and the big players, but it’s always more difficult to find one who’s not so well known. The information the club has given to me about him has been very good.

"For now and for the future, we have a very good central defender."

Gardos said: "This is one of the happiest days of my life. It’s the biggest step of my career so far.

"Coming to the Premier League is a very big occasion for me, and Southampton was a team that had a really good last season so this wasn’t really a hard decision.

"I’ve had a very good first impression of the club. There’s a very big difference between what I had back home and what is here.

"I’ve always said that coming to Premier League would be a dream come true, and luckily I’ve been able to achieve that dream now."

Gardos has enjoyed plenty of success with Steaua, winning the Romanian top flight two seasons in a row, the Romanian Cup in 2011 and the Romanian Supercup in 2013.

He started his career at Concordia Chianja in Romania but his talents were recognised by Steaua, who paid €150,000 for him in 2010.

Daily Echo:

Since then, he has gone on to play 81 times for the club, scoring three goals.

Gardos had the option to play for Hungary but chose to represent Romania, and has played for them at youth level and full international, where he has so far won 12 caps.

So that is Shane Long and Florin Gardos for less than Liverpool paid us for Lovren.

This has been a great week in the transfer market for Southampton.

However, I bet there will still be people that complain that he is not a marque signing blah blah blah.

Koeman and his team are building a good squad here, which could evolve into a great squad over time.

My first post on here, glad to be joining all the lively discussions! Very excited about the new season as all looks to be falling into place with some good looking signings who will want to give their all for the cause. Glad we haven't any if these so called big signings who come with massive wages and the potential to disrupt the dressing room, they were never ever going to come anyway. I don't feel the board could have done too much more to prepare for life after Judas and his disciples, they got a great manager and have spent 40 mill (more than last year I think.) and a new journey has begun...COME ON YOU SAINTS!!!

Always does his job and most on here signalled him out for praise last season even when, quite often, he only came off the bench.

Come on Board, give the lad a break and a new contract, and sharpish, please!

I don't feel the board could have done too much more to prepare for life after Judas and his disciples, they got a great manager and have spent 40 mill (more than last year I think.) and a new journey has begun...COME ON YOU SAINTS!!!

What, do you mean the club isn't really being stripped of all the assets and that we will soon be playing back in league 1.

It has been a great day, I just wish it was a Friday and then I could celebrate with a beer... Oh I may just do that anyway!!
Well, I won't do that. Never could stand beer, but a nice glass of Chardonnay will go down a treat and I will toast ALL of you and especially the Saints!

Need to sign Corky for MF/RB cover and to see if he can play CB (I reckon he'd be pretty good alongside a big lump like this lad)

I hope Lovren chokes on his lump in the throat when you never walk alone is played! If there is any one player that really showed his true colours it was him and I really hope Liverpool achieve absolutely nothing this season.
I also see MU are already having doubts about Shaw. Now that was a great piece of business by the Saints board!
I am now at long last beginning to look forward to this season with renewed optimism

Sorry mate, being serious I don't get your post.
That probably explains why you can't grasp simple maths then, Gaz. Let me help you.

ALL the players SIGNED by Saints this Summer are available to wear the shirt. That includes the two who have come on loan with the option to buy. What don't you get about that? So, including managers, here's the score:

Out: MP, RL, AL, LS, DL, CC (6) No, you can't include Guly, Billy Sharp, J. Forte or Osvaldo because they were either released, allowed to leave for a song or, in Osvaldo's case, moved on in the best possible manner. Osvaldo, remember, was already on loan prior to the new board's arrival. Some would say he should be included in the HCs' score.

In: RK, GP, DT, ST, RB, FF, SL, FG (8).

We've no idea if the new players are better, the same or worse than those who have left. We don't even know if they are better value overall. We do know that they will take time to settle in and that the outlay for those eight (including money we would spend on the two loanees) is less than the £92m we are apparently set to bring in for the five players that were sold to 'BIG' clubs.

Moan all you like about the ability of the board, or Ralph, or Les, or Katharina. I've expressed doubts over their handling of certain matters), but it was you who introduced this silly HC vs Negs (players in vs players out) scoring idea; at least get the sums right and admit that, compared to the end of last season, as things currently stand, the club has strengthened the depth of the squad to the tune of TWO.

I don't feel the board could have done too much more to prepare for life after Judas and his disciples, they got a great manager and have spent 40 mill (more than last year I think.) and a new journey has begun...COME ON YOU SAINTS!!!
Beware of the so-called neggies on here who claim to be Saints fans and then just spend their lives ripping into the club from the quality of the toilet paper, the temerity of the owner wanting to make some money from her business, and of course none of the board have a clue about anything and the wums who can manage everything from washing their underwear to managing British aerospace. These people are truly gifted and you can only wonder why the political parties haven't snapped them up as ministers or the FTSE 100 companies as CEO's, maybe they're just holding out to be space cadets though. Other than that welcome to the best season ever.

About sums you up!

Bl00dy hell stras, it's only a bit of fun.... nothing serious.

But I still call the shots and my score is the only official one on here that counts.

However, if you wish to make an official complaint got to info@couldnotgiveado

The Youtube videos showed you have some class as a defender (a younger version of "Alan Hanson" imo).
I hope you respect the fans & honour your contract and don't jump ship like the previous "badge kissing two faced bunch".

The only downside it appears that you are "out for a couple of weeks with a minor injury".

I also see MU are already having doubts about Shaw. Now that was a great piece of business by the Saints board!
I am now at long last beginning to look forward to this season with renewed optimism
Saw a picture of him today taken from one of their warm up games. I know the camera angle could have been 'unfortunate' but I was shocked. He looked like he'd put shed loads of weight on, face all puffy. It is going to be a very interesting season tracking and assessing the success of the departed and the new arrivals. COYS!

Well said! None of us knew how good Lovren, Lambert, Rodriguez etc were before they came and many moaned when they did. Lallana and Shaw had one outstanding season last year and the first one where Lallana was injury free - he's back to normal already. And Shaw used to have hamstring problems in the past so we looked after his young body. United know nothing of him, van Gaal has pushed him too hard and Bob's your uncle, their goes his hamstring. We have to trust our manager and the scouts who've delivered before. If the so called stars had stayed we may have signed 2 or3 but still have been a thin squad and prone to injuries. If Koeman is right that we've signed as good or better replacements, with 8 in and more likely to follow, we suddenly have a very strong squad on paper. Now starts the real test!

Surely if the loan has an option to buy clause they count as a buy even if it only a try before you buy, a look before you book, a whine before you sign. Your software is not up to it and needs to be sold off as part of your arsehole stripping exercise. Besides you can't count Arsevaldo as an out as he was gone months ago at the request of the man who bought him here.
How does fairplay fit in with this blatant gerrymandering.
So your outs are Shaw, Liarllana, Chambers, Lovren, Lambert
Yours ins are The Romanian CB, Forster, Bertrand, Long, Tadic, Taider, Pelle
and the one I've missed who I know you will have great joy in reminding me about.
Pretty one sided comp lads especially as there are more to come.
This is going to be an orgasmic season.

As stated in rule 24 section C, the only players that count towards a score have to be permanent players and management/coaches owned in full by Southampton Football Club. So 1pt for Koeman and 1 for Pochettino

I actually wanted to include all the released players and the loanees, both in and out, but alas it wouldn't let me.

But you can be sure of fair play by me at all times... thank for your interest.

P.s. how the hell did you get to use the word ******** ?

Maths clearly not your strong point!
No understand sharehoder.
About sums you up!

Bl00dy hell stras, it's only a bit of fun.... nothing serious.

But I still call the shots and my score is the only official one on here that counts.

However, if you wish to make an official complaint got to info@couldnotgiveado

nald.com and fill in the complaints form.
Sorry! My bad.

I guess my humour levels are being kept low while I struggle to understand why those moaners who plagued the recent Chambers thread and, yesterday, the Cork thread (and I don't include those like you who post your thoughts when things are going well or not so well) haven't all rushed on here today to say how delighted they are with this quality signing.

So, on behalf of the happy clappers, a bit of tongue-in-cheek (mathematically inaccurate) humour to finish:

Six nil and you fecked it up, six nil and you fecked it up ...........
Hahahaha..... made me chuckle :)

Looks like the team is gradually coming together. Cant say I really know most of the new players & will take time to settle in. Could be a tricky initial period but feeling a lot more confident than this time last week. Forster & Long are known to most of us & I think they are good long term signings. Other players may still leave - thats football, players like Cork will want to play each week & they can't be guaranteed places. As long as we are competitive & play good football we will be fine. After the first 10 games we will know if its working!

Well said, Strasbourg Saint.

I have said before that costa's scoring system is flawed. His method does not acknowledge that loan players will play for Saints this season!

Cripes, that must mean Osvaldo is still available to play for Saints this season. Oh no! I wonder if that will upset the neggie veggies!!!

All is well because costa assured me that his is officially the official scoring system for officially scoring the Happy Clappers versus the Neggie Veggies official score.

I am, though, ever so slightly concerned that costa's scoring system will lead to the Premier League deducting lots of points because Saints will have fielded loan players in matches this season. That could cause all the doom mongers to go into raptures because, according to them, Saints won't get many points anyway this season. Their theories of doom are, of course, entirely correct !!!??? Lol!

Welcome to Shane Long and Florin Gardos. I guess some of the doom mongers have ready noticed that a Florin is two shillings in old money, so I'll satisfy all those with glasses half empty by also welcoming Ten Pence Gardos. I wonder how a player with that name might fit into costa's official scoring method. I can't imagine him scoring one player a ten to the Happy Clappers! Lol!

Please be smiling, costa. I'm only trying to stay cheerful in the face of all those others who are doom theorists.

How does the scoring system work Gaz. Negs: Poch, Lallana, Lovren; Lambert; Shaw; Chambers =6.
Pos: Keoman Pelle, Tadic, Forster, Bertrand, the inter swap, Long, Florin. = 8.
Hardly scientific proof of a good summer but we're 8 - 6 up. What have I missed?
Sorry mosschops, as I have explained before, rule 24 section C does not allow loanees or released players to score a point.
Add Billy Sharp to the MoD score and take off Bertrand and Tadhir from the HC's score and it comes out at 6-7

Rules is rules you know... where would we be without rules.
I don't make the rules, so I can't change them.

The scoring system is simple. Ignore the thumbs up or down as they are affected by wums and doom mongers. The sensible posters invariably get proven correct (with a few exceptions) and the reactionaries and knee jerkers usually disappear for a while once they have been shown to be wrong. Quite a few are skunts anyway and incredibly they actually think they are winding us up even though every player in our squad is worth more than their entire shabby little club. But then again without them who would we have to laugh at.

He doesn't count the two loanees (so, HCs have 6 not 8), but I still don't know how the negs get 7.

But it's HIS game and HIS rules. I used to play park footy with a guy like him. He brought the ball and it was his jumpers and shirts that made up the posts, so every shot our team had either went over the bar or round the post, and his team's shots always went in, even when they were a yard or two past the post or over the make-believe bar.

It's a bit like how FIFA, UEFA, the FA and the Premier League run football these days :-)

Maths clearly not your strong point!
No understand sharehoder.
About sums you up!

Six nil and you fecked it up, six nil and you fecked it up ...........
of course they wont acknowledge they are wrong they are either sad people who predict the worst then are happy when they are right or skates trying to cause unrest..Im am chuffed to get these two in and saints will be stronger than ever with commited players!

If you want to include loan players you will have to include Turnbull at Swindon and Osvaldo.. you can't just cherry pick who to include.. there would be a riot.

So I have kept it simple and only included permanent deals.
PS it's not for real... just a bit of a laugh

This is all skewed toward the benefit of the big clubs. Fair play is better thought out than this. You all should be ashamed of yourself for picking on the little clubs - go for the cartel at the top.
Software out, it's a sham, the ship is rudderless - who's steering this anyway. I shall write a strongly worded letter to the Guardian at the earliest opportunity.

Game on, we will have 11 players to start the Liverpool game after all.
The scoring system is simple. Ignore the thumbs up or down as they are affected by wums and doom mongers. The sensible posters invariably get proven correct (with a few exceptions) and the reactionaries and knee jerkers usually disappear for a while once they have been shown to be wrong. Quite a few are skunts anyway and incredibly they actually think they are winding us up even though every player in our squad is worth more than their entire shabby little club. But then again without them who would we have to laugh at.
8-6 to the happy clappers ie fans who trust the board and dont think they know more that RK whos a winner as player and manager asset stripping wont spend money sssssssssssshhhhhh
If you want to include loan players you will have to include Turnbull at Swindon and Osvaldo.. you can't just cherry pick who to include.. there would be a riot.

So I have kept it simple and only included permanent deals.
PS it's not for real... just a bit of a laugh
These rules stink!

Ah I see, well who made these rules because they such. Betrand, loan with option to buy, is most definitely a positive.
I think it was the same person who modified the offside rule. If it wasn't him it was the committee at UEFA which decided that our Scottish feeder club should stay in the champions league after being dumped 7-1 by Steua.

Koeman, Long, Gardos, Pelle, Tadic and Forster.. are the 6.

Unfortunately loan players cannot be included in this scoring system, the software will only accept permanent signing and likewise for out going players.
Hope this clears the matter up for you and if I can be of further assistance please do not hesitate to contact me.
If we're being picky we've lost 13 players and brought in 7 so still 6 players down on last years poch light squad! Just saying!!!!!!!

Maths clearly not your strong point!
No understand sharehoder.
About sums you up!

There is only ooooonnnneeee (own goal) in the hooveerrrrrr (per game)!!!!

Joking aside, he is a Saint and it does not look like he is going anywhere. He was always the last player to stay on and applaud the crowd after every game he played in. In the championship I thought he was pretty cool and still have respect for him.

Maybe his best years will be in the championship like Sharpe, but watching his interviews, and knowing how Saints improves players he might even be OK.

Glad we signed Florin though, and still have that sneaky feeling we might just need one more CB.

Seem to recall that we signed Corky on loan from Chelski first time as a defender and he had a few run outs at both RB and CB. Don't see why we couldn't utilise him there now, although like many on here I'd prefer to play him in CM instead of VW. Interesting that Palace are going through the mill at the moment (Pulis teetering on the edge) - makes you wonder whether it's the chairman and not the manager that wants him!

Victor Wanayama was a beast of a defensive midfielder in the first part for the season where we were third. (Pass short Victor for God's sake!!!!!!!)

Cork is good, but I think Victor will come good.

Wanyam a aside, Cork never disappoints, and while I understand it, I would would hat to see him go.

Neither Cork or Morgan were prolific, and Jack Cork could do with a goal or two more but he rivals Morgan in his central offensive play.

Don't see why we couldn't utilise him there now, although like many on here I'd prefer to play him in CM instead of VW. Interesting that Palace are going through the mill at the moment (Pulis teetering on the edge) - makes you wonder whether it's the chairman and not the manager that wants him![/p][/quote]Victor Wanayama was a beast of a defensive midfielder in the first part for the season where we were third. (Pass short Victor for God's sake!!!!!!!) Cork is good, but I think Victor will come good. Wanyam a aside, Cork never disappoints, and while I understand it, I would would hat to see him go. Neither Cork or Morgan were prolific, and Jack Cork could do with a goal or two more but he rivals Morgan in his central offensive play. Of course it would be great if we got Vlaar, but I would be wondering how Gardos and Fonte would fit into the scheme of things if it were to happen. One of them would have to be happy spending time on the bench, as I would imagine that Vlaar would be a first choice starter. Being that Fonte has just signed a new deal and given the captains armband, it would presumably be Gardos taking a backseat?

Ronald did say in his interview, that he wanted competition in the squad,as its a long season, and he wants to maintain the Premier league standard of the squad.
I'm not disappointed to see Long coming here,as I think he may surprise a few people who have doubts, but his interview amused me,when it sounded from what he was saying, that he might have taken a hit for the Mrs by moving.Still,no matter,he here now,and I reckon he will do OK.

I admit I was taken aback when the price for Long came out and in comparison his goal scoring tally didn't add up to the price we paid. I was hoping for a striker who was a prolific scorer. I was pretty unforgiving in my comments initially but Koeman seems to have a plan with Long's playing style in mind. It would make sense to use experience scoring in low level teams, his work rate and intensity to assist Pelle in banging in more goals. I hope it pays off because it could be good to watch.

Im stated last season when the threat of cortese leaving was over the club and certain players came out and said they had signed to the club for cortese and the dirty Argentine and certain players said they would have to review their positions,. I was hate the skates back then. I said these staff signed for a club not an individual. So if they forgot that fu@k off. I believe many signed for an individual not a club when that individual left they had the hump. Ig was causing bull sh! T and being disruptive, if that was the case the club got top top doe for them and how many it took to clear the influence of cortese out so be it. The fans wont and dont like it but at the end the people now in charge may be nieave and inexperienced but I belive wgat they have done is for the grester good of this club. I will always surport the club not an individual, morgan came out in public last year and said if cortese leaves he will have to review his positiin, he signed a 3 year deal on cortese word, I said he can fu@k off then and he can fu@k off now,I wwould rather go down with a bunch that trys and fights than with a bunch if whiners whi dont care cause their deluded shepherd left.

And a nice post to boot.

Still question the price, but more than happy to have him on the team. He'll knuckle down and focus on his football, which is the attitude we need after a summer of primadonnas throwing tantrums. Welcome aboard Mr. Long.

His English is very good, seems a pleasant enough young man and we should be able to squeeze a couple of good seasons out of him before he too wants to move on. Clearly intelligent too. Good first interview.

Very happy to have this fella in the red, white and black.
