Saints will appear in their red and white shirts for the first time this season in the Premier League today. As the stadium fills up it is clear that the new shirt has been popular among supporters.

2:28pm

We are just over half-an-hour away from kick off. Saints will be hoping to build on a good performance against Liverpool last weekend. Ronald Koeman has named an unchanged starting XI. But Florin Gardos appears on the bench after signing for £6 million from Steaua Bucharest after recovering from a hamstring injury. Former Brom forward Shane Long is also a substitute.

2:19pm

Saints legend Francis Benali is certainly eyeing a Saints win today. Tomorrow he set off on Benali's Big Run, which will see him run to all 20 Premier League stadiums.
He'll be covering 40 to 50 miles for 21 consecutive days. He's hoping to raise £1 million for Cancer Research UK.

2:14pm

Today’s opponents West Brom drew 2-2 with Sunderland last weekend in Premier League. Young Englishman Saido Berahino scored both, one from the spot.  He could, once again, be their danger man and will be one to watch today.

If you’re up-to-date with the current situation at The Hawthorns, Alan Irvine is currently manager. He’s somewhat inexperienced and takes charge of a side that has suffered a lot upheaval this year.

Irvine has managed Sheffield Wednesday and Preston North End, but this is first Premier League management job.

Daily Echo: Alan Irvine

This summer they’ve signed nine players. Former Saints defender Chris Baird is among them – arrived from Burnley on a free.

Craig Gardner and Joleon Lescott both arrived on frees also, from Sunderland and Manchester City. Andre Wisdom came in on loan from Liverpool.

West Brom broke their transfer record by signing Brown Ideye for £10 million from Dynamo Kiev – the striker will unlikely appear today.

Australian defender Jason Davidson also came in from Heracles Almelo, Costa Rica defender Cristian Gamboa switched from Rosenborg. Left back Sebastien Pocognoli came in from German outfit Hannover.

Their most recent arrival came in the form of Greek striker Georgios Samaras, who left Celtic this summer. The Former Manchester City player won’t feature today.

Last time out against Sunderland at The Hawthorns: Foster, Wisdom, Pocognoli, Gardner (Yacob 84), Dawson, Olsson, Dorrans, (Sessegnon 84), Mulumbu, Anichebe, Berahino, Brunt (Baird 77)

2:12pm

Pitch is looking glorious as usual. As can be seen in James Ward-Prowse's selfie earlier on.

2:10pm

The keepers are out warming up at St Mary's. No Artur Boruc, with Kelvin Davis on the bench today. Youngster Cody Cropper joining in with the senior stoppers.

2:06pm

Ronald Koeman names an unchanged line-up from the side that started last week's 2-1 defeat at Liverpool. The most notable aspect of the teamsheet today is that centre half Florin Gardos, a £6m summer signing from Steaua Bucharest, is included on the bench after recovering from a hamstring injury. Ex-West Brom striker Shane Long joins him anong the subs. For the Baggies, former Saints player Chris Baird is on the  bench.

2:05pm

THE LINE-UPS

SAINTS: Forster, Clyne, Fonte, Yoshida, Bertrand, Wanyama, Schneiderlin, Ward-Prowse, S Davis, Tadic, Pelle.

Subs: K Davis, Gardos, Long, Taider, Cork, Hooiveld, Isgrove.

WEST BROM: Foster, Wisdom, Dawson, Olsson, Pocognoli, Mulumbu, Gardner, Berahino, Dorrans, Brunt, Anichebe.

Subs: Myhill, McAuley, Davidson, Ideye, Sessegnon, Yacob, Baird.

Referee: Roger East.

2:02pm

The week that followed the Liverpool match has seen a comparable quiet week at Staplewood to many over the summer.

The focus of attention has turned away from St Mary’s after a summer full of words like ‘meltdown’, ‘turmoil’ and ‘exodus’ as well as constant speculation over players.

Now, it seems, Koeman’s squad are settling down.

Although, as reported by the Echo yesterday, keeper Arthur Boruc has requested to leave St Mary’s after losing his starting place to £10 million man Fraser Forster.

1:58pm

Daily Echo: Ronald Koeman

Last weekend was the opening fixture of the Premier League season, and, with many expecting Saints to struggle, Koeman’s side were the better side as they lost 2-1 to Liverpool at Anfield. A performance the manager wants to build on.

There they were reunited with ex-Saints Dejan Lovren – who received a frosty reception from the travelling fans – and Rickie Lambert who got a hero’s welcome from both sets of supporters after their respective summer moves. Adam Lallana did not feature due to injury.

Nathaniel Clyne got the first goal of the season for Saints after linking up with Dusan Tadic, who sold Lovren a treat with a cheeky back-heel, before Clyne leathered it top right from inside the box.

England pair Daniel Sturridge and Raheem Sterling netted for the Merseyside outfit to give them a narrow win.

1:53pm

1:52pm

Daily Echo: Lloyd Isgrove rounded off Saints' win against Besiktas (action images)

Lloyd Isgrove came off the bench at Anfield last week to make his Premier League debut. The winger spoke to the Daily Echo this week about the occasion and the prospect of walking out at St Mary's today.

1:48pm

1:47pm

..today will not tell us much either way, however a win will be seen as proof positive of the board and a loss will bring out the harbingers of doom, as for moi i am 50/50.

G’day all, let’s get the Saint Ron dynasty off and running with 3 points today.
There was plenty to like in our performance at Anfield and we were worth 3 points if we had been more ruthless in front of goal. The Baggies should give us a good test and hopefully we can build on the confidence gained from last week. Saints to win 2-0, COYR!

Probably a reasonable summary. I can't comment because, alas, my Internet went walkabout early in the second half. It probably gave up on what sounded like 90 minutes of tedium.

Early days and not the time to start crucifying players so I won't.
As a team we were just boring, unadventurous, predictable and non-effective. Not a time to worry about it as there is plenty of time to rectify. Boring and Saints is not something we've heard together for a long time.
Pelle needs someone alongside him or just behind him 4411 or 442
Just my opinion from the little I've seen.

Let us be patient a little longer, though the window only has 9 days to go.

Ref Pelle. Poor game but, here are some gems from a while ago that I kept for a moment like this. All from comments on here when J-Rod was settling in:

"Rodriguez is not a premiership striker"
"Rodriguez just isn't ready for this level"
"..get rid of J-rod the guy is useless"
"Get rid of J-Rod and three points for us"
"J-Rod... Scored the goal but is, by far, our worst player. This guy is like playing with 10 men!"
"J-Rod is terrible"

No names, no pack drill but some of you should know better. Give Pelle a chance.

And, by the way, a message for the crowd. Do you think ironic cheers when he gets on the end of a header are the way to help him to settle?

Ok, going to try and keep my opinions succinct:

Positives:
Foster, Bertrand and Tadic look the real deal
Back four looked compact and solid, although had far too much to do from an average WBA side
Tactically look fairly organised
Morgan didn't look like a man who was leaving at the end

Negatives:
Looked a yard short all over the 2nd and final third, hence amount of free kicks and pressure on back four
Played like the away team, 10 yards too deep, especially first half
Pelle will need to sharpen up quickly if he is to cut it and keep the 'fans' off his back
Long didn't really get a kick

What do we need:
Probs another CB to deal with long season
Pacey wide man to inject craft and fear factor to compliment Tadic
Sharpen up all over the pitch and stop silly free kicks when ball given away
J-Rod

Summary: Koeman has done a REMARKABLE job in the time given, and another 2 or 3 quality signings will make us a very tidy unit

COYS

Hope you are enjoying the Cricket - you missed nothing with the football.

STADIUM was full in Kingsland and Itchen - so the core Prem supporters turned up - the gaps in the Chapel and Block 3 Itchen North told their own story. Passionate Front Line Support and Kids with their families have been turned off by the Summers events.

PUB WATCH - the Tribal passion has declined and if Saints supporters do not own the Pubs - then they are overrun in the Chapel outside the Pub and Away Fans think it is ok to chant in our Pubs near the Stadium. The Facebook page of the JOSHUA TREE shows Saints Fans outside on the Streets. NOW - you get a bouncer - no-one outside - time to relocate for the ECHO CROWD - you always need to be SMART and MOBILE Season after Season.

FOOTBALL - Keeper is good - but slow to distribute. The Team have not gelled. Pelle was seen in the De Vere with his girlfriend recently looking miserable - so his head is not right and only had half chances in the air to get a goal.

SUMMER - If you sell the goals in the Team and are quick to sell for large sums of money and do not make a stand and keep your quality players - then you reap what you sow and struggle. We lack TOP QUALITY and GOALS in the Team.

LAMBERT - Saw his piece in the Echo this week - what does he f***ing know - he was also surprised that Saints Fans were not more angry with the sell out of the dream by the board - We are ANGRY - but also with the sell out Players including Liellana and Lovren. We MISSED him today and we sold him on for just 4 million.

BOTTOM 6 - That is where we will be living and Fans will need to have the stomach for a relegation FIGHT - after been sold out by FAT KAT - KRUEGER and REED.

HOME FORM - Plenty of Draws ahead - the occasional WIN - and losses to the so called Top 6.

AWAY FORM - Defensively OK - but not creating and set up to score GOALS.
Low scoring - clean sheets - draws and few WINS.

ALTERNATIVE VIEWS - There is always Sh!tehawk - or FB - sitting in Itchen North by the metal barrier (the only one with a son surrounded by empty seats) and plenty of WUMS living in a bubble on the Forum.

PLAYERS - Do you really think after the Season last year that the Players just want to walk round with their families and THINK - is this all it will ever be - no passion - no pitch invasion - just sedentary fans.

SHIRTS - HOSPITA:ITY - SEASON TICKETS - All sales down and FAT KAT - KRUEGER - and LES REED all have a share of the responsibility of what is on show now.

CHAMPIONSHIP - Norwich are showing - you can bounce back.

DAILY ECHO - Nonsense from them saying you can sell your TOP QUALITY - Saints don't need it as not in Champions League. RESULT - STALEMATE and Teams cancelling each other oiut.

SOLUTIONS - NEED Quality to unlock Teams - Need to get wide and get in crosses and chances. Need 2 up front and STRIKE-FIGHT-WIN.

POST FOR SEED

A LONG HARD SEASON AHEAD. COYR+WS

Thanks for the update. Doesn't sound great. Crap here too with Hampshire bowled out in a reduced 16 over knock. Surrounded by Lancashire but still gave it HAMPSHIRRRE!

Firstly the positives. Forster looks a really sound keeper and was the best Saints player. The defence looked ok and Yoshida had a reasonable game, Tadic worked hard and showed some skill.
Now the problem areas: Pele was poor and instead of holding the ball he kept giving it away! I don't like the long ball game we are using and we seem to have lost the speed and tackling that we had last season.
We don't appear to be using the wing backs as we did last season and everything goes through the middle. This suited WBA as they were quite strong in midfield .
Wanyama, JWP and Spider were not in form today either. We desperately need another forward to provide some speed and I am afraid if Pele doesn't show some improvement he will become another Guly

I didn't take my son you moron, you misread my post yesterday. He is far too young. You have gone too far with this post.
Mate, your comment on pub watch ? Where are you coming from, this has all moved on from the 80's & 90,s., where out of interest, you lot were no where to be seen. In today's football, especially in the Premiership all fans are welcome at away grounds !
My comment is on 'Alternative news' and it is about me.

Why blame the new guly when like you said, the team played too narrow, midfield was poor, and and there was very little overlap with the wing backs. Gulyfying players ain't saintly.

They are gelling. Picking a hate figure does not help.

The speed man is Shane long who did not get much ball time but missed the one chance he had that I can remember.

Could be worth taking a look at the tactics.

It is a team in translation and this is a game we could have easily have lost even last season. We played poorly and did not lose.

Not blaming Pele just giving an observation on his performance today. I agree we can't judge on 2 games so here's hoping!
There was no atmosphere in the stadium today and I suspect that it was down to the performance which was definitely below par.
The adoption of long balls is a worrying change of tactics , when we have such a good midfield who can pass the ball well.
However there were no outstanding outfield players today.
Why is Gallagher not getting a look in.?

I am a bit puzzled by the accusation of no atmosphere, granted it wasn't Kop quality, but I was listening to Radio Solent on earphones, and the combination of their effects mike and the live sound around me decries the opinion that there was no noise, the acoustics at these flat pack stadia does tend to give a false impression, I reckon it sounds different on the pitch.
At one point during the second half the noise was definitely louder from the Chapel End for a while, around the time that JWP hit the post. There really wasn't a great deal to get excited about to be honest.

The adoption of long balls is a worrying change of tactics , when we have such a good midfield who can pass the ball well. However there were no outstanding outfield players today. Why is Gallagher not getting a look in.?[/p][/quote]Gallagher has a leg injury I believe. OSPREYSAINT

Have some real concerns about Pelle. If you take the past two seasons at Feyenoord out of the equation his career stats aren't promising at all.
Doesn't ever look as if he is is going to score. Doesn't even look like a football player. As poor a striker as I have seen in 50 years.

Excellent post, especially about the ironic cheers - made me grimace

POST FOR SEED

A LONG HARD SEASON AHEAD. COYR+WS
I didn't take my son you moron, you misread my post yesterday. He is far too young. You have gone too far with this post.
Mr foot soldier I am becoming tired of the way you conduct yourself on this forum perhaps to avoid any further problems we could arrange to meet before the next game and discuss our differences?

Match of the Day is OVER - and it is there for all to see - the poor display - the slowness and lack of cutting edge.

REALITY must surely bite when the words RELEGATION and Southampton FC are mentioned in the same sentence - even if it is only one of the football pundits.

The SUMMER CHAOS could have been handled so differently and Fans have been angry about this - this will boil over again in the forthcoming weeks as we sit 4 or 5 from the bottom of the League . COYR+WS

Firstly the positives: oops there aren't any.
Now the negatives: pele is a waste of space, can't win anything and certainly can't hold up the ball at all. We need a striker. Didn't realise Long had come on for the second half, and did my ears deceive me at the end when they said that today's game would be reimbursed if you bought a season ticket?

two matches in and Pelle is 'a waste of space'?

with such knowlegdge and obvious tactical genius, please explain why you aren't manager of southampton and why we haven't therefore won everything.

quite a lot of people need to calm the f*ck down and take a reality check.

New Manager
New players in the squad

these things take time to gel and it's not going to happen overnight no matter how much you lot stamp your little feet and throw your toys out of the cot.
the only thing this team needs to achieve this season is to be better than three other teams in the PL. After that we can worry about winning stuff.

If you can't see this, then you really do need to step away from the keyboard and think long and hard.
