Koeman hails his Fors of nature

Fraser Forster

Saints manager Ronald Koeman hailed the performance of Fraser Forster against West Brom and says the keeper is capable of becoming England’s number one.

The 26-year-old signed in a £10m deal from Celtic this summer and he showed on Saturday why the club decided to spend so much money on bringing him to St Mary’s.

The 6ft 7in Forster was a commanding presence, claiming numerous balls into the box with authority and making a superb one-on-one save to deny Albion striker Brown Ideye late in the match.

“The goalkeeper is a very good one, we know that, because that’s the reason why we sign players,” said Koeman. “He’s a young age for a goalkeeper.

“Ok, we knew the situation about (Artur) Boruc in our club, with one season more on his contract, more older, and we have to change that, and he brings qualities, he brings experience and he showed that.

“It was a difficult one last week. He didn’t have a lot of work to do as a goalkeeper.

“Today not (either), but in the one or two moments, in the crosses, he was very good.

“He’s a tall one, he’s a good goalkeeper. He’s a goalkeeper for the future and he shows his qualities.”

Koeman would not be pressed into saying that Forster should be England’s first choice, saying it is not up to him who Roy Hodgson picks, but he did agree that the keeper has the abilities to do the job.

“He’s capable,” he said. “He was one of the three goalkeepers in the World Cup.

“If you take three to the World Cup, all the three can play, because they are all good goalkeepers.”

It didn’t take long for the Saints fans to start chanting “England’s number one” on Saturday, as Forster impressed.

Koeman added: “Ok, we like that, that he will be number one of England, of course, because that’s good for himself, it’s good for his experience, and finally it’s good for Southampton.”

Having been left out at Liverpool on the opening weekend, Boruc was again not included in the matchday squad on Saturday, after informing the club he wishes to leave in order to find first-team football.

Koeman has revealed Saints are willing to move the Poland international on before the transfer window closes, although they will reassess his standing in the squad once the deadline passes if he is still at St Mary’s.

Should he go, though, Koeman says there are no plans to bring in a new back-up keeper.

He did reaffirm that the club are continuing to look to add “one or two” more players before the deadline.

It's when Forster doesn't play for whatever reason, that Boruc will be missed,if he leaves, and isn't replaced.

Agreed if Boruc goes we will be back to Gazza who quite frankly is just not good enough. However I can understand Borucs frustration.

Gazza lacks mental strength and tends to freeze when selected for first team duty. Boruc is a real goalkeeper. Real Ale versus lager. Although prone to the odd mishap. Letting Boruc go would be a gamble.

FORSTER does look to be the best of our new signings.

I have watched the Bayer Lev, L'pool & WBA games and so far I am concerned that we are not buying good enough quality.

BERTRAND has done OK, but has not gone up the wing much.
TADIC looks as though he is adapting OK but concerned that he has 'disappeared' at times during the games.
Not seen GARDOS so only concern at the moment, is he good enough ?
Also not seen enough of TAIDER but he looked lively.
LONG is what he is as seen when he was at West Brom & Hull, he will be an option & cover at best. Probably best played up front, not wide, but will only score his usual 6 or 7 goals this season.
PELLE is the biggest concern, admittedly his service has been poor, but by his own admission he has to improve, although at 29 he should be experienced enough to do this quickly. It is his basics that are a concern he has not won many headers for a big man and those he has were miss-directed. He does not hold the ball up well and his lay-off's have been poor. Hope his finishing is better when we must give him chances in the box !

We MUST buy a better quality CB, Goalscorer & Winger this week.

TACTICS - I am not sure if the players are as fit as last season but I miss the High-Tempo pressing game, the nearest we came to doing it came in the second half at Liverpool which has been our only good half of the six halves I have watched. Also we have started playing the long ball up to Pelle rather than the passing game that is not good to watch especially as Pelle has not done well with it.

Still a lot to do and 3 or 4 Better Quality players to be signed this week.

Excited by the Toby Alderweireld rumers and Nathan Redmond could be better value than Andros Townsend. What about E'to'o or Kalou up front for a season ?

Come on Les keep going last but busiest week ! It will be a long wait until January otherwise.

I don't disagree Gazza lacks game time which is essential for confidence. So a losng out might be a good idea as I just can't see him improving otherwise.

And contracts can only be broken by the player, so as long as he is under contract and wants to stay we cant do a thing!

I think gazza could become a good keeper, but like Osprey said he needs game time. Les isn't a fan of loaning players out as he believes they will not get the quality of training they will with us. He is currently training with 2 top quality keepers and Kelv and Cody, and he is being trained by the England goalkeeping coach, if that doesn't make him into a good keeper nothing will.

I like forster and think he will be a better keeper than AB, I rate AB as well though and it will be a shame to see him go, I hope he stays and fights for his place so we have 2 quality keepers on the books.

There are not that many forwards out there who could be available. What we shouldn't do is go out there and recruit some second rater as what we need is high quality to supplement the experience we have lost.
Although we got big transfer money for the players we sold, when you look at the cost of top players did we really do that well!
It all feels a bit last minute dot com, and after Saturdays performance I am struggling to see where the goals are going to come from. Long will score goals but only if he gets service. Pelle mmmm!

It will be a long wait until January otherwise.[/p][/quote]Given that you're Sam E'to's agent, please can you ask him if he'd be willing to come on a 50% reduced salary and without Saints having to pay you any agent fees? Boruc is a great keeper but hasn't been missed which is credit to Forster, who I think is better. More focused.
It's when Forster doesn't play for whatever reason, that Boruc will be missed,if he leaves, and isn't replaced.
Agreed if Boruc goes we will be back to Gazza who quite frankly is just not good enough. However I can understand Borucs frustration.
I rate Gazza.

Horse, "And contracts can only be broken by the player". Technically, none of the players who left this summer broke their contracts. There is nothing, it seems, in the contracts that makes it wrong to agitate for a move away.
