Fonte: We're treating the cups seriously this season

Captain Jose Fonte insists Saints will be taking the cup competitions “very seriously” this season ahead of their Capital One Cup second round tie at Championship side Millwall tonight.

Fonte took the match day skipper’s armband from Adam Lallana – with Kelvin Davis remaining club captain – after he left for Liverpool this summer.

And one thing high on the Portuguese’s agenda, in his new position, is ambitions of taking Saints all the way to a Wembley final.

Last season, much to the disappointment of supporters, Mauricio Pochettino insisted on playing a weakened side in cup ties.

That decision inevitably resulted in Saints getting eliminated from the FA Cup and Capital One Cup, when perhaps they could have used the knockout competitions as a means of keeping their campaign interesting with their league status confirmed.

In the fourth round of the League Cup, Saints were beaten 2-1 at Sunderland in November before, again, suffering defeat at the Stadium of Light in the FA Cup 1-0 in the fifth round.

But this season will be different, according to Fonte, and is an ideal time to put impetus on a domestic cup.

“It’s a great opportunity to go on a run,” he said. “It’s something we are going to take very seriously.

“That is one of the main things for us this year because we don’t have any European competition.

“We need to focus mostly on the league but cups are very important to us and we want to do well in them.

“Who knows, we could get to Wembley.”

The 30-year-old centre half tasted cup success in his first season at St Mary’s when he helped lift the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy with Saints beating Carlisle 4-1 in the 2009/10 final.

Earlier that campaign, the ex-Crystal Palace defender made his Saints debut at Millwall in January 2010.

Rickie Lambert was on the score sheet in the 1-1 draw.

This game is good for giving new signings and upcoming academy players a run out. Far more important than cups this season we need to get the team gelling and get some good points on the board.

If a competitive game isn't taken seriously, its a professional disgrace.
The bottom line is,football is an expensive product, which the public are paying far too much for.Any attempt, for whatever reason, not to give full value for money,is fraud.

Jose Fonte saying Cups games this season will be taken seriously suggest he knew that last season The Deceitful One treated Cup games as Mickey Mouse competitions and this is another sign of his disrespect to Southampton Football Club and for once it is something Les Reed cannot be blamed, it's very ironic that now he Manages a new Team he has changed his opinion.
All Games are important and often it is a chance for Players who haven't played in League games and have patiently sat on the Bench to be included which I am sure they will be delighted to prove a point to Ronald Koeman because they too want to be in the first team, with Ronald's experience he will know who to pick also it can help him to analyse who could make it for the first team and to keep all the Players on there toes and play and to bust a gut, all Players know they are paid good money but not to sit on the Bench, 3/4 wins on the trot including Cup games can help lift confidence and move them up the League.

I really do fancy a cup run this season to compensate for all the crap we've had to put up with. But I do see the dilemma - if Millwall in the league cup isn't the time to give Boruc, Targett, Isgrove etc a run out then when is? If they get no competitive action then they can't be expected to be on their game come injuries and suspensions.

THE thing is how far back can we go when OUR club have or have not taken a cup match on with the intention of doing the fans a favor? I SEEM TO RECALL a certain game against norwich city back in the eighties, full members cup??? when pompey were in line for the winners..a dreadful game which saints made IT 1-1 near the end of full time only for a very lame 30 extra mins in which norwich got the winner without breaking sweat! The question fans should ask themselves is why do we get stick for being cynical????now on the other hand the club made plain it wanted to win the paint trophy in 2010...SO WITH THE ABOVE STORY IN MIND..THANKYOU VERY MUCH SOUTHAMPTON F.C. THE OLD CV IS A BIT THIN.

Boruc isn't going to play seed.
Ronnie said the other day that if he is still here after the window shuts he might be included in the first team, but he wont be included before then. looks like a chance for kelv again.

I was at the Sunderland game last season not only was the weather bad so was our display. If we had taken it seriously we would have beaten Sunderland easily, because they where just as bad. I have a feeling this will not be the case this time around. So pleased to see we have a team with spirit all it needs now is a little bit of time to gel, this will come very quickly starting with Millwall then wetspam on Saturday. Can't wait to wipe the smiles off the faces off the 2 worst managers in any English football club, if fact nearly if not on the same par as those poopy boys along the coast.

What I'm mean is that every game with Ronald Koeman unlike The Deceitful Liar ( sorry Seed I've no respect for the Liar) will be taken seriously and is important and because he has a vast experience he will know who to include in the starting 11 to keep a strong Team with the possibility to include those who patiently have to sit on the Bench and Ronald knows they are all good enough to be in the first Team, as you know Seed winning games breeds confidence also of course it generates a lot of money and if Saints won a domestic Cup and we would all love it to be the FA Cup they are on the ladder to compete in Europe and play against some of the top Teams in Europe .
I hate treading over old ground but we will never know if The Liar had conspired to hopefully lose games because he knew he wouldn't be the Manager this season so did not want the Team to win any Cups as he would of felt obligated to continue as the Manager of Southampton. We all want the Team to win everything League games and all Cup games and prove that they can be better than last season COYR
