Langley Manor are claiming what is believed to be the highest team total ever wracked up in Hampshire recreational cricket.

Left-hander Connor Browne led the way with an unbeaten 180 and Graham Noble smashed 140 as the Manor piled up an astonishing 484-5 in 50 overs against relegated Southern Electric Premier League Division 2 outfit Totton & Eling II.

It was the fifth time a 400-plus score had been made in SPL cricket, but Manor’s 484-5 comfortably surpasses three previous best 412-3 made, ironically, by Totton seconds against Trojans two seasons ago when Dave Taylor’s treble century sparked off local controversy.

Browne’s 180 came off 131 balls and contained 32 boundaries.

Noble blasted 140 off 55 balls – his century came off 43 deliveries – hitting eight sixes and 17 fours.

He dominated a third-wicket stand of 193 with Browne, who then put on 143 with Matt Alford (54).

“So, it wasn’t a bad dream then. It really happened,” sighed beleaguered Eels captain Sam Metcalfe, who tried seven bowlers in an unsuccessful bid to stem the torrent of runs.

Mitch Parker fared the worst, with figures of 0-115 off eight overs, while Jon Moody saw his two overs smashed for 45 runs.

Metcalfe at least had the satisfaction of taking Alford’s wicket as his five overs went for 53 runs.

Totton replied with 192 all out – Nigel Bungay and Nick Evans each hitting 37 – conceding a monster record 292-run defeat in the bargain.
