Saints are through to the third round of the Capital One Cup after Jack Cork and Graziano Pelle scored their first goals for the club.

After a disappointing first half, half-time sub Cork headed Saints into a 53rd-minute lead - his first goal for the club in 111 appearances - following a Dusan Tadic corner.

Summer signing Graziano Pelle, who played alongside full debutant Shane Long, doubled the lead in injury time.

Saints manager Ronald Koeman made only three changes to the team that drew with West Brom on Saturday, with 18 year-old Matt Targett making his debut at left-back.

But it was much-changed Millwall, with just goalkeeper David Forde and defender Shaun Williams surviving from Saturday's Championship defeat by Rotherham, who should have been ahead at half-time.

Daily Echo:

Byron Webster flashed a header across goal and wide before Magaye Gueye's composure deserted him in front of goal and he shanked his shot past the post.

Just before the break Jermaine Easter tried an angled volley but Jose Fonte stuck out a leg and deflected the ball over.

The visitors, meanwhile, were easy on the eye but creating next to nothing, with a weak James Ward-Prowse shot which rolled into Forde's arms the sum total of their efforts in the first half.

It was Millwall who threatened again moments after the restart when Webster fed Easter, who cut inside from the left before rifling a shot narrowly wide.

But that only seemed to wake Saints up and they promptly laid siege on Forde's goal, with both Tadic and Pelle forcing the Irishman to tip fierce drives over the top.

And from one of the resulting corners, Southampton broke the deadlock, Cork ghosting in at the near post to nod Tadic's cross past Forde.

Daily Echo:

It could have been two moments later when Nathaniel Clyne scampered down the right and crossed for Pelle, but he was denied a first goal in this country when his header shaved the post.

Plucky Millwall pressed for an equaliser and their former Saints midfielder Richard Chaplow went closest when his shot flew narrowly over.

But Pelle settled it in injury time when he raced onto a through-ball and calmly beat Forde from 10 yards.

Apparently our fans showed great support for Pelle today, backing him throughout the second half and they were rewarded with the goal, that's the way to do it, slagging him off will never work, lesson learned I hope.

That's excellent news, we do have such good away support no need to let ourselves down by getting on the backs of our own.

Well done to Pelle it must be such a weight of his shoulders and I suppose the manager who has shown faith in him so well done to Ronko and the rest of the saints team also.

Let's work one into wet spam and things will truly be going in the right direction.

Not long back.
Played Ok but so did the whole defence , Yoshi was outstanding.
First half was a non event too many back and side ways passes too sluggish in the build up.
Corky came on after half time and the game was transformed.
I like to say "I was there when Corky scored" He was sheer class.
Pelle scored after numerous attempts and saves by their keeper.
The crowd were fantastic they lifted Graziano even when he was knackered and despairing.
Great night out well done Saints.

Because we still have a few remnants of the trolls from Pompey, Skiverpool, Manure and those claiming to be in Australia who trawl through here daily and will give thumbs down to anything that certain others of us on here post, unfortunately Osprey is one of their regular targets. must important thing here was Pelle getting off the mark

The assist for Pelle's goal should go to our FANTASTIC away supporters who were chanting his name And he acknowledged them in his post match interview

Good on you Saints lets have some good cup runs and we might even get into Europe.

It would be good for the Echo Photographer to get a picture or two of our fans at away games as they deserve at least this for their loyal support!

I remember being at the Shed end one game!
