Saints boss Ronald Koeman says his side are gunning for the Capital One Cup trophy after advancing past Millwall.

Koeman fielded a strong side at The Den, as the club booked a place in the third round of the competition with a 2-0 win.

The Saints manager said thoughts of making wholesale changes to his team had never entered his mind.

“We like to win titles and I know for everybody it is not the most important one, but we go for it,” he said.

Koeman revealed how he had to have some strong words with his team at half-time, though.

“It was two different 45 minutes,” he said. “After the first 45 minutes, in half-time, I was very unhappy about the team, how we played. We didn’t control.

“Millwall played a fantastic 45 minutes, but we were very, very sloppy and not aggressive, not pressing.

“But we did it much better in the second half. We created a lot of possibilities.”

Koeman also pointed to the “spirit” brought into the team by Jack Cork, who was brought on at half-time for Victor Wanyama.

“Cork brings the spirit in the team after half-time and everything was much better,” he said.

Cork opened the scoring, with his first ever goal for the club, before summer signing Graziano Pelle got his own Saints career up and running with his opening strike for the team in added time.

“He was important in the second half,” said Koeman. “You see if we play a little bit more up, with more players around him, he’s a good striker, and he deserved to score.”

Koeman also praised Matt Targett, who produced an impressive debut at left-back.

“I heard that Gareth Bale made his debut in Millwall, Luke Shaw made his debut against Millwall, and if Matthew will have the same career of both players he will be very happy,” he said.

Also good to see Corky got a run and scored. I was hoping to see Gardos and Taider get some game time, but I guess I will have to be patient.
Can't get over the Man U vs Dons game. Apparently MK Dons whole squad cost £235k, less than a week of Rooneys wages!

Meanwhile lets stuff some of that spirit up Fat Sam and his spammers for 90 mins on Saturday. 3 or 4 would be great.

I had a feeling when I woke up this morning that Schneiderlin has played his last game for Saints , he is being trades for Townsend, feel it in my bones, and Jordy Clasie is on his way to us as well. I feel bad about this, love Spider, so underated, but feel it might be a very good deal for Southampton if we can get Clasie as well, hes a good player apparently Koeman believes in him. Why wasnt Spider involved yesterday havent heard he was injured. Watch this space...pffff

Good result boys and nice to See Pelle on the scoresheet, little things like that and Jack scoring can do wonders to their confidence and team momentum. These types of games have to be given the due respect else you run the risk of placing yourself in embarrassment of Manure size proportions.

If Ron can work out the reason why we are only playing well in second halves of games, we will quickly be on our way back up the table.

Why the hell can't we tie JC down to a new contract? What a difference once he came on. Get it done! On a separate note, please don't let Spider go - I hear Poxytino's mob are playing hard ball over Townsend cos of our stance with Morgan. No brainer as far as I'm concerned. No deal, keep Townsend.

Spiders a great player and has served us well over the yrs but from what ive seen of him this season although doing his bit it all seems half hearted , if his heart isnt here get rid and bring in replacements and get cork signed up on a long term contract if he wants 2 be here .... Then watch another former players career stagnate and drift into oblivion when he jumps ship to supposedly bigger and better things .

Great stuff - a manager who wants to win trophies and who is building depth to the squad to make it happen. No smoking mirrors with this guy. Once the link up and understanding with the new front men is sorted it'll be like a proper Saints team, cup runs, and scoring goals in every home game and plenty of 3's and 4's.

Spider is part of our history - but like the others it would be counter productive to keep him if he really wants out. On the face of it Freddie will have egg on his face again but when you think back to his original statement about not selling any players he made it in the context of the club's financials - reading between the lines, that might have be interpreted as no one's for sale but if the money's good we might have to consider. And that's what happened - anyone watching City v Liverpool the other night was laughing at the 20m we got for Lovren - and 30m for Shaw, who can't get a game, even more so.
What I'm saying is if we get Townsend in a part-ex deal for Spider which would leave money to go towards Clasie (a very good player) and the Belgian defender, I would say we have done some excellent business in the window. (why does no one like Townsend - the team has been crying out for width IMO for years this is a player who can bring it and works hard (are all the hens going to start clucking about this signing as well?)

Seems like a plague of paranoia has struck again. Post September 1st it will all be about the January transfer window, just wait and see.
