Saints facing tough competition for Alderweireld

Toby Alderweireld

First published in Sport

Saints face stiff competition if they are to land Belgian defender Toby Alderweireld.

Reports in Spain suggest that Arsenal are stepping up their efforts to secure a deal for the Atletico Madrid man.

Ronald Koeman has identified Alderweireld as a target as Saints look to bring in two more signings ahead of the close of the transfer window on Monday.

Alderweireld is a versatile player who can play at both centre back and right back.

Saints also face an increasingly bleak-looking battle to land Andros Townsend from Tottenham.

Spurs are not budging on their stance over Townsend, with Saints having dug their heels in over the North London club’s pursuit of Morgan Schneiderlin.

Former Saints boss Mauricio Pocehttino has now publicly stated that Townsend remains in his plans, despite the 23-year-old England winger having been dropped from the 18-man squad that beat QPR 4-0 last weekend.

“He is in my plans,” Pochettino said of Townsend. “It is impossible you play or have in the squad only 11 players – you need 24 or 25 players.

“I think we have to play a lot of games and it is possible you play tomorrow, then don’t play in the next Premier League game, but the most important thing is understanding that we need to choose for the games.

“It is only 11 in each game, after that another three impact players come in.

“We have an unbelievable squad and my job is not only to put my philosophy in the club or on the pitch on how we need to play, but I need choice and that is my job.”

What's the point in reporting what Pochettinwho has said? I don't really care what another team says about one of his players.

I'd have thought both your "points" have already been more than adequately addressed.

As for the Argey Bargey comments, who cares? He's had a good start in his new job... he knows he has to keep that up or he'll be out and become another foreign manager bouncing from club to club, he's basically Villas Boas 2.

Still at least he's being forced to speak in English now. Take a moment and look at what he said - read it out loud if necessary.
it's meaningless drivel. It's like listining to a Zen buddhist talking about the meaning of zen being three pounds of flax. Little soundbites of absolute tripe. You got more out of the interpreter.

As far as Townsend is coincerned he's not worth this much fuss.

Alderweireld would have been a good purchase. I really doubt we'll be seeing him in our stripes though. Shame.

Has anyone noticed that during the "Exodus" / "Meltdown" / call it what you will, we were guaranteed a new headline every day on the BBC and Sky sites on the strength of nothing more than someone leaving St Mary's in the evening and not being heard to call out "See you tomorrow".

For the last few weeks there's been a deathly hush in Hack Town. Surely it can't all be as a result of Man Ure being worse than anyone could have imagined and the media machine struggling to find ways to conceal it?

yes probably because they will be knee jerk reactions by Reed to paper over his failings in the market. Hes been an absolute disaster, sold all our best players failed to replace them before they left, and then allowed Chambers to leave for silly money. Unless we can sign a couple of top players we could be looking at relegation, right here right now.

100% agree! Let the media and player's agents go into overdrive during the final 4 days. Meanwhile, we'll get on with the serious business of confidentially negotiating for several of our unknown targets. It might also be that several earlier deals, that have gone quiet in the last couple of weeks, may yet come to fruition. I hesitate to mention any names as it'll start another media frenzy. So, to keep this strictly between ourselves, I think one of the final 2 (or 3) might come from Ron Vlaar, Virgil van Dijk and Nathan Redmond.

i have faith in RK i like his interviews very honest and open.
It will take time to get the team playing together but once they do gel
i think we will be stronger.
Chambers i believe had a clause in his contract so that is perhaps why he left. As for the others most of them showed a lack of respect for the club and it supporters as did MP i'm afraid money talks. If you analyse each player and why they left i think Saints maybe fairly blameless.
We have also got very good money for each player.
The mistake perhaps has been not replacing the players quick enough.

People slate us for not being ambitious enough, but at least we are gunning for players who are wanted by the bigger clubs. And, if you want to go for players who are in demand you've got to accept that you'll miss out on occasion.

That's if we are legitimately interested in him and if Arsenal are legitimately interested in him and, frankly, that's only speculation at the current moment.

So if Wenger is prioritising a versatile player who can play right centre back or right back where does that leave poor Callum? Got to wonder if he was aware he'd be third choice right back/centre back and whether Rickie was aware he'd be third or fourth choice at Liverpool (although let's face it he should have been aware). Sad waste of talent.

Have to feel Rickie has returned to the dark ages with England and Liverpool - just a battering ram big man for the last 5 minutes if you need a goal and haven't got any other choice. Very sad because anyone who has watched his progression knows he is much better than that.

yes probably because they will be knee jerk reactions by Reed to paper over his failings in the market. Hes been an absolute disaster, sold all our best players failed to replace them before they left, and then allowed Chambers to leave for silly money. Unless we can sign a couple of top players we could be looking at relegation, right here right now.

I don't like Reed and have been vocal about him before on these pages highlighting the damage he's caused at other clubs. That said I think he's just about got away with it sop far, given we have bought some decent players. But this is signing we must make along with an improved offer and securing the services of Redmond (who would be better value than Townsend). If Jordy Claise can be secured as well the whole set up is stronger than last season and you can't ask for more than that. I don't fancy that Celtic defender - not sure how quick Gardos is so on the face of it we need some pace in the central defensive areas.

How can you blame mopo for leaving.really.put yourself in his shoes and tell me you wouldn't have done the same. People who thumbs down this reply are deluded. Let just hope ronko knows what he's doing because mopo didn't have a clue about signing players.

I partly agree but think we should now wait until after the transfer window closes on Monday to let Les concentrate on the top quality 3 or 4 signings that we still need before demanding explanations regarding the reasons for selling each of our 5 players. I believe both Les & Ralph hasve shown naivety and a lack of experience this summer so they do need to explain their decision making.

We must sign a top CB, so if Arsenal look like beating us to Alderweireld we should turn to Wollscheid.

I agree that we should sign Jordy Clasie before anyone else does as he is top quality.

MoPo is clearly not going to sell Townsend to us so we must find another pacy winger with a good cross, not sure Redmond is good enough.

Also we need a proven Goalscorer before the window shuts.

Still 4 top players to sign by Monday night, you are leaving it a bit late Les, or is that you are unable to convince top players to come to us?

It's just that I'm not sure all this 'Les is dithering' stuff is justified.

As far as I can see the only target we've been strongly linked to who moved elsewhere is Rojo and he was busy befriending Man Utd players on Twitter and likely always on his way there anyway.

Hernandez didn't want to come or wants high wages and had the club given in to an inflated fee or wages for him we'd have been regretting it, because he isn't very good. Fair enough.

Other than that we beat Liverpool to the loan deal for Bertrand and have secured the other targets we've been linked to, including very good acquisitions in Forster and Tadic, while the others look like decent business too.

Quite a few people seem to not like it (rightly in my opinion) if we pay over the odds for players. They call that 'panic buying', so why would we go in with silly money bids for the likes of Townsend, Rojo and this guy just to get it done in a day? There is a price we are willing to pay and if negotiations drag on it's because our valuation is different to what they are asking. I suggest we stick to our guns and try to do the best deal for the club and, if it means we miss out on a few, fine, as long as we aren't desperate for the players. If we are, sure, get it done.

You want a panic buy? His name is Angel de Maria, good winger but 60 mill? 10 or 12 mill are not panic buys, they're called Prem prices. Bring this Toby in and Jordi and Nathan, these 3 would come in all for the price of one spider..... Hmmm?

I agree, Manure is definitely in the panic buy stage for a second season.
It’s an interesting dynamic with the sharp increase in transfer fees this season. Are we complicit in the root cause of the inflated prices with the fees we were able to extract for our departing players? I like to think we have fleeced the scousers and Manure.

Looking at the following few random examples of inflated prices:
Shane Long 12M, Graziano Pelle 10M, Ross McCormack (Fulham) 11M.

LFC may just have got the bargain of the season in Ballotelli for 16M ...... Let’s hope not.

Valid observation Mush but for me Balotelli is and always will be a liability - - a man-child with a mental age of 11 and absolutely not the sort of player you would want training with the academy lads. And not the type of player you would want to wear the stripes (and I mean that genuinely). Liverpool are not very discriminating about the type of 'characters' who play for the club now. To my mind they are no longer old school having ditched the values and accolades of a club that does things the right way. I hope and believe Brenda will fall flat on his considerably large nose.

Cheers RBITB, don’t for a minute think I’d want him at Saints.
He is a player of exquisite natural talent but needs to grow up and take responsibility for his career. Maybe, Gaston is a player that will need to follow the same analysis to realise his talent.

I’m a Saints fan first, but I’m also a lover of football in the wider community. All world class talents and entertaining personalities are welcome by me into English football.
I even love the skunts god bless ‘em for their contribution, how wonderfully entertaining and funny are they as a football club?

You are right about Brenda and LFC as a proud club that used to do things the right way. This is the modern era of business values over ethical values in football. Barcelona used to be the team with no paid shirt sponsor, giving it up for free to Unicef. Now they take on Suarez for top dollar with all his baggage in desperation to dethrone Real Madrid. ...... Brenda will definitely fall flat on his is considerably large nose this season, I will be watching.

I hope it isn't you trying to convince players to come anyway - not filling me with optimism based on your nicely one sided assessment of the summer.

Still, I guess judging by the increase in negative posters today some people just get a bit nervous and agitated as the window approaches, let's hope the board and manager have calmer heads and aren't panicking like some fans.

Your post doesn't mention any of the incomings or good signings we've made and in terms of us demanding the signing of Aldeweireld or Wollscheid, they might be good, who knows - don't think anybody had realistically claimed to know these players at all, now we NEED to sign them. I just hope Les and the team aren't as easily swayed by agents and paper talk as you seem to be.

Everyone was saying we needed to sign Florin and as soon as he signed people were saying he was a dud... without even seeing the guy. It defies belief.

The odd thing is that the people clamouring for signings are the same ones who seem to have such little faith in our recruitment.

So the question has to be why, if our recruitment experts are so rubbish, do you want them to sign anyone else anyway?

Indeed. £16M for Ballotelli, a few really impressive goals (Osvaldo anyone?), a media circus at every turn, other 'star' players with their nose put out, and a complete meltdown of team spirit. Good value? I'd say he's priceless.

Indeed. £16M for Ballotelli, a few really impressive goals (Osvaldo anyone?), a media circus at every turn, other 'star' players with their nose put out, and a complete meltdown of team spirit. Good value? I'd say he's priceless.
Ask any Citeh fan JD, they love him. I’ve heard lots of player interviews and they amount to the same thing, he was not the trouble in the dressing room that is being portrayed, but he is child-like.
I’m not his apologist, I think it may go t1ts up for LFC, but at the same time he may re-energise them and the Kop after the departure of Suarez for a considerably token fee.

Osvaldo anyone? ... I don’t think so, Ballotelli has already proved he has the talent to cope in the EPL. Whether he is priceless or not, we will soon see.

Sky Italia correspondent Gianluca Di Marzio is reporting that Arsenal have made a bid for Borussia Dortmund's Greek defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos.

Will this change things or does this indicate that Alderweireld is coming to saints?
Imagine if he were coming to Saints, how on earth would Dave Merrington (bless him) cope with that name...

Yeah it didn't read too well, Dave Merrington (Solent Radio commentator, just checking you knew that) would have a problem with the pronunciation of Papastathopoulos...
mind you he will likely have a problem with Alderweireld too if we ever do get him in!
