RUMOUR MILL, August 28 - Ramirez linked with loan move to Spain

Gaston Ramirez

Gaston Ramirez

First published in Sport

SAINTS enigma Gaston Ramirez is again being linked with a move to Spain.

The Uruguayan international playmaker, who made a late sub appearance in Tuesday's League Cup win at Millwall, is reportedly a target for Sevilla on a season long loan.

Elsewhere, Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino is still reportedly interested in his former Saints forward Jay Rodriguez.

But with the player still sidelined through a cruciate knee injury, Pochettino could turn his attentions to Manchester United's Danny Welbeck instead.

Interesting that just like Osvaldo nobody wants to buy him. To me he was a big disappointment who had lots of ability but did not have the strength for the premiership. We paid a lot of money for him and I think eventually we will take a big loss, again just like Osvaldo.Still if he is off the wages perhaps we will get on with signing up Corky

I would hate to Gaston go, I believe this season will be his chance to shine, he hasn't had much joy over the last couple of years, needs a decent run in the team IMO to bring the best out of him, anyone can see he's a confidence player.

I personally hope he stays and flourishes. I don't know why but I like watching him play when he is on song, I know that hasn't been often enough but that is more due to injury and being played out of position. Scored a cracker of a goal at Everton and provides a different goal scoring option than anyone else in the squad. Whatever I wish him the best as he hasn't done anything wrong by saints even given he was told a team would be built around him by Cortese which is why he chose us over Liverpool. How many have done that in recent times?

Slight change of subject - RK keeps going on about needing a winger and we have been linked with several, but one name that hasn't been mentioned who might now be available is Jason Puncheon, he will probably be someone Warnock will be keen to sell due to the pair having a frosty relationship, and I would be more than happy to see him back in a Saints shirt.
It will never happen, but would anyone else welcome him back??

So a rumour about a Saints player going to Spain once again ends up with the Echo's obsession with Poxytino and Spuds. Boring or what.

Maybe the Echo could transfer their reporters to Spuds and Poopy and sign some real sports journalist instead of the copy and paste brigade they have now.

Agree with both posts. Yes I would have him back (I was annoyed when we sold him) at the same price we sold him to Palace. But equally we should be able to sign someone better with the money we have available. Not worried about the smart asre remarks character thing, that's fine by me.

Got to hand it to The Deceitful One he's not giving up on Jay or is it his Agent reminding everyone to keep the Irons hot, I thought Jay appeared to be one the rare breed of having loyalty and not wanting to jump ship for the root of all evil, he's certainly missed and the sooner he's fit and active the better but we all hope when he's played a few games and scored he then thinks it time to ask for a move, I truly hope this doesn't happen.
I rate Gaston, he has silky skills and posters on here have said this could be his year, perhaps Ronald doesn't feel he has the physical strength for the Premier League and maybe this is why The Deceitful One didn't include him in the Squad as a regular, to Jesus_02 his language is Spanish and other than Brazil all the other Countries in South America are Spanish speaking, I've not read anywhere that Gaston is unhappy, in the Bournemouth game he looked a different player and hungry to want to do well, after everything that has happened since April nothing surprises Supporters any more so it won't be a shock if he went. This week in gossip on the BBC web site Wenger wants Wanyama, if he goes and I hope he doesn't it's getting close to the sell off of the whole first 11 from last season, you just wouldn't ever dream this but to see it actually happening bit by bit was something I hope never happens again to Southampton FC

Personally I don't think he plays for the team, just for himself. Flatters to deceive and then fizzles out. How many games has he started? How many games has he started and finished? How many games has he come on as sub and then disappeared into obscurity after 10 minutes.

Very talented but not committed. Would be better suited to a league/country with a slower pace that values individuality over a major contribution to team play. Has some of the characteristics of Le Tiss, but even Le Tiss, by his own admission, wouldn't get a regular game in a PL team these days.

For me he can go. He's been a bit part player for us and I can't see him being anything else. Which probably means he will come on as sub against West Ham score 3 in the last 20 minutes and we will win 4-3.

It would be a shame to see Gaston go, yes he hasn't done enough for us but there have been lots of reasons including career threatening injuries and family losses. He also had liarlanna ahead of him in the pecking order, and many of those calling him a flop would have been more than upset if liarlanna was dropped for Gaston!
Could be a good year for him at the club if he stays and gets the run of games he needs. I certainly saw a change in him last season before his ankle got bent sideways by cart horse Brown at Sunderland.

Perhaps an unpopular view on here but I think, there is just too much hype about Gaston, Tadic has already outshone him and he has only played 3 games. If you offered me Gaston or Puncheon I would take Punch - and we let him go for free.
Gaston has to go back to Italy and get his career back on track before its dead and burried in the epl.
It very frustrating as he promises so much, but enough is enough.

Here we go again Les. Gaston should have a run in the team, if that is not to be then sell him do not run his contract down and therefore his value to nothing. Les does not seem to understand the concept of cutting your losses but getting some of your money back.

Agree with the points on here about talent and not being given a run in the team. Lie-llanna was always ahead in the pecking order so you would think he would get a chance now. He might be better than JWP in that position behind the strikers with JWP pulling the strings in central midfield. But then we also have Taider. I would like both of them to be given a chance but I think Ron looks for physical and combative attributes and Gaston doesn't really have those.

100% agree. His first half display in the pre-season friendly against Swindon was by far his best for us so far. He linked up really well with Tadic, Pelle and the others, made some impressive runs and covered a lot of ground. He had only recently returned from the World Cup and had missed almost all our early pre-season stuff. I thought that Ronko might bring the best out of him and we might finally get a return on our investment. Then he went off with his groin injury (although he might have picked that up afterwards) and apart from being a bencher in our last match, we have heard nothing more. Is this yet another rumour? A greater majority of the foreign media stories do seem to have more substance than the UK's but then, agents often find it easier to talk up deals (Rojo being a prime example).

Gaston is a quality player but if RonKo considers he doesn't fit in his plans then we should sell him and cut our losses, loaning him out and still have to pay half his wages looks like another Osvaldo situation.

Les & Ralph seem happy to carry on paying part of these two players wages and let other clubs have the benefit of them whilst we allow their contracts run down, only for them to walk away for nothing ! What a waste of £25m+!!

Do hope something is happening after RK's comments about signings.

BBC gossip reports Sunderland are interested in Van Dijk. Thought we were, but nothing or was that also just chat?

As for Punch, be surprised but he must be spitting all sorts of things now that Warnock seems to be returning. But it was fun seeing him running off to the bog! A unique occurrence, perhaps?

I’d be happy for him to stay and wish he would turn into the player we all hoped he would. We’ve mostly been saying the same thing on here for a few years, undoubted quality but we have not seen much consistency or match winning performances from him.
Uruguay national team have been scratching their heads with the same conundrum of how to get the best out of him and he has remained a bit-part player for them mainly coming off the bench.

I certainly saw a change in him last season before his ankle got bent sideways by cart horse Brown at Sunderland.[/p][/quote]I’d be happy for him to stay and wish he would turn into the player we all hoped he would. Yes we probably will, but let's be honest the last couple of last day transfer windows have been pretty boring for us so hopefully we get a quality deadline signing so trawling the internet on the last day isn't fruitless.

Strange situation with regard to GR. He was a record signing with a biggish reputation at the time and some commentators were surprised he came to saints. However three managers at saints seem not to have rated him based on his game time for the club in the last few years notwithstanding a string of injuries. Makes you wonder whether Les Read et al talks to the management team before buying players and if they have any input into the purchase decisions?!

I think that Koeman does not see Gaston as a useful member of his squad and is happy to get rid of him if he can. Also, the Daily Telegraph has Cork going to Crystal Palace and thinks that the deal is almost complete. The news on incoming players is very quiet, and unless there is a transfer which is in the advanced stage of negotiation I do not think there is enough time to bring players in, especially from overseas. I do not know why Saints do not make a bid for Wellbeck as he is pacey, can play wide or through the centre, and scores goals. We need someone like him rather another defender, or at present another midfield man.

Couldnt agree more, must be a big move for a 22 year old, change of country, language ect. Lets hope he doesnt go.
Heavens !! Two good posts of absolute common sense so early in the morning.

There's hope for these threads yet.
Really ? The Ramirez I've watched, yes has oodles of skill but is temperamental and downright lazy; he only shows an interest for a maximum 20 out of 90 minutes. A passenger that the team can't afford.
Season after season they said the same about LeGod - we didn't listen then and it didnt turn out too badly any reason why we should listen now?

He's had a torrid time with injuries too that has to be factored in. Whether he goes or not I think we will forever be wondering if we had got rid too soon and under the wrong circumstance 'cos from what little I've seen of him he has the ability to be a game changer.

I trust Rambros to do what they feel best for the club and will support them in that decision. Won't stop me thinking this lad has a bright future ahead of him though.

We seem to sell and get no players in return, if Morgan goes or Wanyama goes, we need players back as part of the deal, end of. Same with Pochettino, if he wants a player, we get one in return. The squad is not good enough or big enough to compete if we lose the last of last seasons heroes. Sats a lot when we can't bring in Townsend, even though he knows he won't get a game this season. QPR signed players we should have, Matt Phiilips, Leroy Fur etc...Tom Ince should have come.

We definitely need some more players...CB who can cover RB - Micah Richards? Winger - Nathan Redmond? and a Striker - ?? but I don't agree we need a marquee signing as some have suggested. If anything our so called marquee siginings in recent years have proved our poorest - Gaston, Osvaldo even Wanyama (jury still out for me) and yet our best players have been those who have shown promise in lower. leagues (SRL, Clyne, J-Rod) or home grown (Shaw, Lallana, Chambers) I would like us to strengthen but not to pay silly money for players who on paper look like a real coup but who turn out to be in it for the money or see us as a stepping stone. I admire the way Cork gives everything and hasn't publiclly made a fuss and I would love to see him get game time, would be sad to see him go but if he does I believe it'll be for game time and not money and for me those are the sort of players who we'll build a club around that is healthy, united and will grow in stature. I'll be glad when transfer window shuts and hope we will suprise a few people this season.

If he has an injury free season we could also stand to loose out as I genuinly believe that his true value in the current market is around 8m.

With an improved season he could easliy be worth more than the money we payed for him.

Everyone seems keen to state that it takes some players a while to settle in this country but are also really impatiant. It seemed to me that he was on the up until he was hacked down from behind at Sunderland.

If he stays he could be the wide player that we are looking for. He stands as much (if not a better) chance as another foriegn import who comes in loate in the window.

Well the one who's out on loan was a Pochaliar signing, he wanted him so the club got him, cant really blame the club for that.
The other, who looks likely to follow him, isn't going according to what Ronnie just said in the press conference.
I know people like to believe everything they read in the press but I prefer to believe what the manager says.
Oh he also said cork isn't going as well so I guess either Ronnie is lying or the press are guessing again, will have to wait until the window closes before we know.

I do love the way some are willing to jump in with both feet with their comments as soon as a rumour of a player leaving or joining surfaces. People moan that this that or the other player is leaving, when they don't, or that we have missed out on players to the likes of qpr or blunderland when we might not have even been after players.

Ronnie said we wont get the Belgium lad and its highly unlikely we wont be getting dross Townsend, not upset by that one! So can we all just forget about them and get behind the players behave got.

How many times do the club have to say that spider isn't going anywhere before the press and some fans get the message? He might go in Jan but thats something to talk about then.

As for clubs 'throwing money away' can anyone show me a club that hasn't wasted big money on players? It happens to all clubs, look at manure with fellaini!

Please back this statement up as I wish to be educated on who and just how bad these are. If my club is throwing 20m+ away I think I deserve to do know about it. Never rated him at premier league level, RK is right to loan him out or sell him; and start to build his own squad of players. Like some i feel Puncheon would be a good addition to the team but don'tknow whether he would want to come back to a club that dispenced with his services before. I'm looking forward to seeing our new centre back playing on Saturday. I think that with Florin and our young academy star James Target our defence is starting to look real strong. Nice to see Pelle get on the score sheet against Millwall, never an easy place to go; but a goal is a goal and might lift him a bit for the next league game.

It will never happen, but would anyone else welcome him back??
nope- a one trick pony with a hit rate of one good game every 4
............With about a goal every 4 games, which is 3 times more than most in our midfield currently. He kept Palace up single handed basically.
He don't take a bad penalty either.

That is why all the past clubs Les has been involved in have gone down and broke ! check his c.v

I was responding to this bit: "I think that with Florin and our young academy star James Target our defence is starting to look real strong." I must have jumped over the sentence before. Sorry about that.
