Hodgson: Why I called up ex-Saint Calum Chambers for my senior England squad

ROY Hodgson has praised ex-Saint Calum Chambers after calling him up for his senior England squad.

The teenager, 19, has impressed since joining Arsenal for £16million from Saints, with the versatile defender included in the squad thanks in no small part to injuries.

“I have been very impressed with his start with Arsenal, but he first impressed me at Southampton playing at right-back," he said.

“I thought he did exceptionally well there during quite a long period of the season, before he eventually lost his place to Clyne.

“He played a good couple of months at right-back and I thought ‘this player looks very, very interesting’.

“Of course Arsene (Wenger) must have been following him even more closely to buy him and he's had a magnificent start with Arsenal.

“I had a chat with Arsene last night and just checked with him that I am not pushing him too quickly or maybe asking from him that he wasn't capable of at such a young age.

“Arsene assured me ‘no, he is ready to take on challenge you want to give him’.

“I am really delighted because I wanted to select him.

“It doesn’t mean he jumps over the Under-21s, which is not an ideal situation.

But will 10 injuries to contend with, especially with six in the defensive part of the field, I didn't have that luxury to give him a nice easy start in the Under-21s.”

Will be very interesting to see if Roy plays him at RB or CB.

Hodgson, you really are a total piece of Cr@p. You really belong with the rest of the Premiership plastic sh!t. I am so ashamed to be English, nowadays. It's not right, really. Clyne?

Yes - as the comments on the the other Chambers Call Up artictle unanimously state - you've got no cedibility Roy with the Saints fans and quite frankly we don't trust you - this summer has completely switched me off to England and I won't be making the trip to Wembley the next time a Saints player gets a call up.

Roughly translated, the real explanation is: he's wearing an Arsenal shirt.

I'm sorry, but the England squad looks dire and why he's still including Rickie (while I love the guy) when he only gave him 5 minutes in a world cup, where we played awfully throughout, is questionable. I'm not saying he's not good enough (though I did expect the World Cup to be his last opportunity due to the 'look to the future' aspect), just that if he's good enough for the squad, maybe give him a game and not just as an impact battering ram option when you want to hoof the ball in the last 5 minutes?

Could be the Liverpool shirt that's prolonged his career of course.

Rickie, Lallana, Shaw and Jay Rod all got their debuts as Saints players so I don't buy the guff about the club shirt they wear. Chambers was on his way to England whether he stayed or not and Clyne and JWP will get their chance too.

Makes you spit, really. We did all the work and, as usual, someone else gets all the glory - here, like Arsenal.

Swanny told TMS that the England cricket team will not win the World Cup. He might turn his attention to the football team because they not only will not win the World Cup, but cannot win the World Cup whilst the Big 4 are spending silly money on foreigners.

Manure's latest £57 million highlights how the PL is the most important thing and foreign players just hold back the home born lads. It is great to see some of the football played (like Man City on Monday) but this just emphasises the long term problem for the England team. At times, it is really depressing. Anyone think I am wrong and the World Cup victory is just round the corner?

We now know why Roy Hodgson was at St Mary's so much last season he was spying for the clubs who where to frighten to show their faces when eying up our players. Funny how he wasn't their on Saturday to watch his old club!
