Ron will find a way to pair Pelle and Long

Ronald Koeman believes Shane Long and Graziano Pelle can play regularly in the same team and thrive for Saints.

The Saints boss has splashed out £20m on the two strikers this summer, but it seemed as though they would be fighting it out for a single spot in the side with one up front and three other players in deeper supporting roles.

That left a straight choice between the brute strength and physical force of Pelle and the clever counter attacking runs on the shoulder of the last defender of Long.

However, having watched them both closely, Koeman believes there is a way to fit them both into the same team.

“That’s possible,” he confirmed.

“They showed me already that it is possible.

“Still with more time and more automatics between the two players it can be better, of course it can be better.”

Pelle grabbed his first competitive Saints goal in the Capital One Cup tie with Millwall and is hoping that Long follows suit soon.

“Of course, but that is for every striker,” he said.

“They live from goals.

“OK, they are happy if the team is winning and maybe with their own performance, but finally the best feelings for strikers is scoring and it’s for everybody like that.

“In the second half against Millwall Long was good.

“We played a little bit different in the first half where he played a little bit more behind Pelle, and in the second half he played a little bit more on the right side.

“We need that kind of player because they bring a lot of spirit to the team.

“He’s a player who tries to make runs in space in behind the defenders and that’s good. We need that because a lot of players in our team like to have the ball and like to go back for touching ball.

“He’s different and you need both in the forwards and he brings in what we need.”

Koeman is also confident that £12m man Long can hit double figures in this Premier League season.

“Yes, because we are happy we have Shane in our squad,” he commented. “We paid that amount for him because we believe in the qualities of that player.”

Errrrrr.... I hope so Ron. Isn't that why we bought them both?

Still got doubts if either of them will score 15 plus which we need to finish in a top half place.....Hope they prove me wrong and that Jay Rod comes back firing on all cylinders.
Not won at Wet Spam in last 5 visits......time to put that right today.

More thoughtful comments from our star manager. This will be interesting to see how it develops.

Then, of course, we await eagerly the return of Jay. Now how will that work? A hatful of goals would be nice, but do not, in any way, want a situation which sees Jay being squeezed and going to the dreaded Spuds because of overcrowding - ugh! No, surely not possible.

I look forward to some of your learned views, so many experts here.

Perhaps Ron's plan may get those 3 points today. COYR&WS!!

Long goalscoring record is not brilliant, so double figures would be a triumph!. Pelle could do a "Lambert" and score regularly. However we have no depth in forwards come any injuries, the enept two i.e. reed and Krueger have failed to add to the squad with many missed opportunities!
RK will do his best to keep us up,but with the above two in charge we are always going to be tottering towards relegation end of the premiership.

I like RK and I think after the summer we've had I'm amazed the owner, directors and Manager have stayed sane. Or is it just us supporters that get rattled by the negative press and idle speculation. Still with what I've seen so far this season the squad is better equipped than last year. And the matches played so far (again only my opinion) would not have played out better if the players departed had stayed, although WBA didn't get the win they got last season. It's also good to hear the Manager speaking in English after games and press conferences, but it should be noted its not his native tongue. He therefore won't have all the correct words at hand when speaking, even us English struggle with that hmm and errr spring to mind to fill the thinking space. So I think the odd strange word and stating the obvious when replying to loaded questions has got to be appreciated. After all these news guys are out to find a story where possibly one doesn't exist. Imagine if RK had answered: No haven't got a clue why we bought SL can't see them ever playing in the same team, news rooms all around the UK would be in overdrive looking for catchy headlines and twisting everything else he said. Crikey they would label us as a selling team heading for the championship from day one of the season. Our manager leaving to take over Liverpool and St Mary's being sold for cheap housing developments!! Sorry still not quite got over the summer. 1-3 today though COYR

Hmm. A bit underwhelmed by Long's performance at Millwall. Defenders dealt with his straight runs easily and he looked to be feeling the back of his knee at one point. A Reading fan I know who used to rate Long very highly but can't believe we paid £12m for him says he's heard rumours of a drink problem. That might explain why he's been moved on regularly. On the positive side if we can get Tadic and Gaston firing we should create plenty of chances for Pelle, J-Rod and Long to put away.

He means that the more they train and play together, the more they'll understand each other and the more they'll play to each others strengths - then it becomes automatic. Just as I believe will the Tadic cross and Pelle finish. I hope all 3 will get a load of starts together.

Just another expert view.

I think Ron is developing a true squad (team) here and not just a group of prima donna individuals.

I really worry, though, that no one else will be brought in this weekend. We really need another striker IMO. The tension is taking years off our lives! It will be fantastic if we get 3 points today.

Big Sam (or somebody) seems to claim that many of his lead players will be missing. I doubt that since he is very astute and is worried for his job.

Three points would surely give me peace of mind and I am sure many others.

We all hope that RonKo can get them to work together having spent about £20m on them.

My heart is hoping but my head says that neither are good enough, I hope my heart wins !

Shane Long is a decent player but I believe he will be on the bench for more minutes than on the pitch this season, especially when J-Rod returns. His goalscoring record shows that he is only a 7 or 8 goal a season player & his goal assists are not good either.

Pelle, by his own admission, has realised that he has to improve in order to be up to Premiership standard. I hope he does, but at 29 I am concerned that he won't be able to. I have seen him play four full games now and the only one that he played OK in was against Millwall, so Championship may be his level. Against the better defenders he has not won many headers & those he has were misdirected, also he has not held the ball up well & his lay offs have not been good, no wonder the fans have started to mock him. Unfortunately he does not have much time to up his game so needs to prove something today !

Therefore we urgently need a proven Goalscorer before Monday night, it is too risky to wait until January, especially if there is an injury to either/both of them.

I agree with this. On the evidence to date our defence looks good and Forster the best signing so far, with Gardon still to show us what he's made of. A good team should be built from the back. Upfront, without having seen Jay or Gaston this season, the evidence from the games so far suggests we still need someone to bang it home. I'm not writing anyone off but surely with these uncertainties those in charge should act now and do all they can to address this potential scoring risk before Monday night. It could be a long wait until January.

I think we need to give Pelle more of a go here; I saw both league games on cable here, and against West Brom in particular he was so isolated he had nobody to direct headers too; when he did have people around him he seemed to lay it off quite well, I thought.

Most importantly if I were him and I heard groans every time I didn't play a world-class ball, I would get anxious and try over-hard, which would ruin my game. Maybe that's why he had a better game at Millwall, where our away fans gave him some support.

Sounds like a statement to appease the fans. If Pelle and Long can play together I would expect to see strong evidence of this by them both being in the starting line-up tonight. I was with giving the Saints transfer efforts time for good players to be brought in, but it looks like now time has run out. Also looking back, it seems that the players we apparently went after were out of our range as most were looking for transfers to teams which were to play in the European Championships. Was this another supposed effort that the instigators of these moves new would not be successful. There must be some positive moves very quickly both in the transfer market and on the team's performance to bring winning results, or otherwise I would expect by Christmas we will have a new manager, probably Sammy Lee who has been in this position before. Must have employed him for something.

If you think you can do better, then get off your backside and go and do it. It is not easy to sign players unless you don't care where your money goes. Yesterday was the first time since 1994 that Saints have come fom behind to win away in the Premier league. So in that sense this team is already better without the bunch of overrated clowns that left us at the end of last season. We have conned some other clubs in desperation out of big money for them an are now better without them.
