Fonte: We can eclipse achievements of last season under Ronald Koeman

Captain Jose Fonte is confident Ronald Koeman's new-look Saints could yet eclipse the achievements of last season.

Dutchman Koeman guided the Saints to a first Barclays Premier League win when coming from behind to beat West Ham 3-1 at Upton Park at the weekend.

It has been a testing start to life at St Mary's Stadium for Koeman, who saw the likes of Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren, Luke Shaw and Calum Chambers all follow former boss Mauricio Pochettino out of the south-coast club, who finished in eighth place.

However, with summer signings Graziano Pelle, the £8million Italian striker who scored his second goal in as many games after the midweek Capital One Cup win at Millwall, Serbian playmaker Dusan Tadic and goalkeeper Fraser Forster all starting to gel, Portuguese defender Fonte believes Southampton can quickly move forwards.

"For sure, we have lost some good players, but this team still has enough quality to have a strong season and with the additions the club were able to bring in, they have shown their potential," Fonte said.

"You know that if you come to this club, you have to play and not be afraid to have the ball, to come and get it, to be dynamic.

"We have been training on that - the manager keeps talking to us about it.

"The manager came with a few, but important details - how he wants us to play and what he wants us to do.

"We have shown that we can do it, but we need to be consistent."

Fonte added: "It is hard to say where we can finish, but we have he quality to be very competitive.

"If we keep working hard and playing like this we can give ourselves a good chance to finish if not in the same position then higher."

For sure, at this point anything is possible! I was looking today at 3 games into last season, and we had the exact same stats.... 1W, 1D and 1L, but 9th on the table by goal difference.

I was interested to note Potty Chino's statement yesterday . He said we must learn from this defeat? Well your last team also lost 0-3 to Liverpool perhaps its you who has to learn! What a pratt, great win saturday complete reverse of last season, perhaps Mr Potty Chino has done us a favour by leaving? We now have a better manager & possibly better players? I think Tadic is better than Lallana, Forster is better than Boric hopefully Pellé will be better than Rickie, our defense seems to be holding up well. I love my saints

yes indeed, agree totally lol. I couldn't believe the video clip that he was proud of his team's performance despite the 3-0 loss! What a pillock.

Nothing against previous manager but new one has far superior experience and knowledge. Also think he has shown far more decisive management during games. Would b great to sneak into Europe but happy if on year 1 we are 9th or above.

Well we're currently 8th so we've already matched the achievements of last season. There's still time to push for top 6 AND win the FA Cup so things are looking up.

I think MP was great at perfecting 1 style of play, and clearly many players loved playing under him. But he had no plan B, and would sit back and sulk if we went behind. It used to drive me nuts. RK is much more methodical, in every game so far you have seen the side improve after 1/2 time. Also Tadic is the bargain of the year, he looks more mature than AL and is 4 years younger. FF is also highly impressive. Well done all involved.

Well said, and you weren't the only one who was driven mad by Pocho's inability to cut and change his system to adapt when things weren't going right - there were many who besieged these very pages their tales of woe regarding this very issue.

I really hope RK is here to stay - he's a breath of fresh air in his honest and hard working approach, and in doing so will hopefully install the same belief in our players that Cortese sparked into them in seasons gone by.
