RYAN Bertrand admits the only disappointment of his Saints career so far was Match of the Day’s failure to show the full 41-pass move that led to the fourth goal against Newcastle United.

All 11 Saints players were involved in the build-up before Morgan Schneiderlin applied the coup de grace with a wonderful finish to complete the 4-0 win.

But only eight of the 41 passes were shown on the television highlights last Saturday night. “Our fourth goal went under the radar a bit on Match of the Day at the weekend, I wasn’t happy with that!” said Bertrand.

“If that move was from another couple of teams in our league it would have been highlighted.

“But we’ll just keep going about our business and see where it takes us.”

Left-back Bertrand believes a second successive top-ten finish is a realistic target for Saints. “I’ll be disappointed if we don’t [finish in the top ten],” he said. “The players are more than capable, it’s about keeping our consistency and our hunger and desire to do something special.

“"After a good win before the international break [at West Ham], in some ways you don’t want that break to come, you want to play the next game while you’re still feeling good.

“But thankfully we got another very good result against Newcastle and there’s still a lot more to come from all of the team. Our style of play is fantastic, we can achieve something great."

Bertrand has signed a one-season loan deal and his family are still based in Surrey. But it would be no surprise if his move is made permanent following his impressive start to the season – assuming Chelsea do not recall him.

“From a personal point of view it’s only the beginning," said the 25 year-old, a 2012 Champions League winner with the ambition to achieve more. I’m working hard to develop every aspect of my game and want to push on from here.

“It’s about getting that consistency of games and raising my level to what I know I can achieve. It’s been a good start to the season and I’ve enjoyed settling in.

“I already knew Corky (Jack Cork), Shane Long and Fraser [Forster], all the boys have been fantastic and everyone gets along very well.

“The fans, the manager, the coaches and all the staff attached to the club have made it a good experience so far.

Southampton’s a fantastic club on and off the pitch and is moving in the right direction.”

Bertrand’s next task will be keeping Nathan Dyer (pictured left) quiet.

Victory at the Liberty Stadium would take Saints above Swansea into the top three, but former Saints winger Dyer has scored thrice in the Swans’ last two home games.

As a result, Dyer has been mentioned in terms of a possible elevation to Roy Hodgson’s senior England squad.

“It’s my job to deal with the quick tricky ones and we’ve played each other a lot – it’s always a good contest against him,” added Bertrand.
