Winchester quickly wiped away the disappointment of an opening day London 2 South-West loss by chalking up a five-try bonus point victory at league newcomers Tadley.

Winch returned home with a 34-6 win – but demanding coach Andy Fields still found a few things to work on in training.

He said: “The players know without my having to tell them that there’s still a lot of things we need to improve.”

He added: “There were some bad defensive lapses in the first half, and we’re lucky that Tadley didn’t take advantage of them. But, that said, there were several flashes of what we can do at our best.”

Winchester’s first try came from Adam Dye after 18 minutes, followed by a Tadley penalty.

Wing Tom Forster then increased Winch’s advantage after good work from Jerry Alfandari. That was converted by Connor Breen and, with the home side slotting another penalty, Winchester turned around 12-6 up.

Captain Jake Hiscock went over the line twice in the second half, either side of the bonus point try from flanker Chris Keegan.
