Saints on this day - October 2.

1962 – Scunthorpe United 2 (Gibson, Godfrey) Saints 2 (Paine, O’Brien).

After Saints drew 1-1 in their League Cup second-round tie against the Iron a week earlier, the saga was forced into a second replay after another stalemate at The Old Showground.

Terry Paine tucked away John Sydenham’s corner in the 15th minute to give Saints the lead, but Archie Gibson forced extra-time with his 73rd minute equaliser.

Brian Godfrey fired Scunthorpe ahead just three minutes into extra-time, but George O’Brien forced a third meeting between the two sides.

Saints would lose 3-0 a week later at Peterborough’s London Road.

1976 – Saints 4 (MacDougall 2, Blyth 2) Fulham 1 (Mitchell).

Saints secured their first league win of the season in terrific style as striker Ted MacDougall and defender Mel Blyth netted braces to lift the FA Cup holders off the bottom of the Division Two table.

John Mitchell netted the Cottagers’ consolation in the 70th minute after George Best was sent off, with Fulham wasting the opportunity to climb into second place.

1993 – Saints 3 (Monkou, Maddison, Kenna) Sheffield United 3 (Falconer, Flo 2).

On Peter Reid’s debut, Saints spurned the opportunity to record only their second win of the season in the Premier League after allowing the Blades a way back into the game.

The hosts led 2-0 after 70 minutes through Ken Monkou and Neil Maddison, and the visitors were reduced to ten men when Dave Tuttle was sent.

Willie Falconer pulled one back for United, before Jeff Kenna restored the hosts’ two-goal cushion with just 14 minute remaining.

Saints threw away their convincing lead as Jostein Flo scored twice in the final ten minutes.

The point wasn’t enough to lift Ian Branfoot’s men out of the bottom two.

2002 – Saints 6 (Marsden, Ormerod 3, Fernandes, M.Svensson) Tranmere Rovers 1 (Allen).

Brett Ormerod’s hat-trick helped Saints storm into the third round of the League Cup.

Chris Marsden opened the floodgates after just 16 seconds, scoring a wonderful goal from 40 yards with a first time strike after goalkeeper Phil Whitehead fluffed his clearance.

Graham Allen equalised on 22 minutes before Ormerod scored his first goal of the night to restore Saints’ advantage two minutes later.

Ormerod bagged his second shortly before half-time, with Fabrice Fernandes, Michael Svensson and Ormerod netting in the second-half to complete the rout.

2007 – Preston North End 5 (Hawley, Carter, Sedgwick, Agyemang 2) Saints 1 (Jones OG).

Saints fell to their fifth league defeat of the season inside nine games on a miserable night at Deepdale.

Karl Hawley opened the scoring for the hosts – who started the night in the Championship’s bottom three – only for Billy Jones to gift Saints an equaliser by putting through his own net.

The second-half was a different story as goals from Darren Carter, Chris Sedgwick and a brace from Patrick Agyemang saw George Burley’s Saints slip to 16th.
