Nathaniel Clyne has been surprisingly left out of the England team for tonight’s European Championship qualifier against San Marino with former Saints teammate Calum Chambers instead preferred at right back.
Clyne had been expected to make his England debut against the minnows at Wembley, but has been named only as a substitute by Roy Hodgson while the man with whom he battled for the right back slot at St Mary’s last season gets the nod.
It is certainly an interesting decision given that Chambers, who was sold by Saints to Arsenal for £16m in the summer, was originally named in the under-21 squad and was only a late call-up following the injury to John Stones.
Saints keeper Fraser Forster was also named on the bench with Joe Hart continuing in goal.
Former Saints Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert and Alex Oxalde-Chamberlain are also subs.
