HE was the multimillion pound Saints’ signing that never made the first team.

But footballer Vegard Forren has made more of a mark on the Hampshire legal system.

Forren, 26, has been convicted of a motoring offence, committed more than six months after he left the club.

He signed for Southampton for £4 million in January 2013 but was offloaded back to Norwegian club Molde by Mauricio Pochettino just six months later, having never played for the first team.

A court heard that Forren, a full Norwegian international whose address was given as Channel Way, Ocean Village, was caught allegedly speeding in a 62-reg Mercedes on West Quay Road, Southampton, on January 31 this year.

Magistrates at Basingstoke were told that the speeding offence had been withdrawn but that Forren was also alleged to have – between March 11-18 this year – failed to tell police the identity of the driver of the 62-reg Mercedes alleged to have committed an offence.

Forren was not present in court to hear the case proved in his absence.

Magistrates fined him £600, ordered him to pay a £60 victim surcharge with £85 costs.

He also had six penalty points put on his driving licence.

He made the headlines in September when, before the Norway-England friendly, he branded Wayne Rooney as a “bit chubby”.

On signing for Saints, Forren said: “It’s a dream come true for me.

Southampton is a big club in the Premier League.

“This is where I have always wanted to come and play football.

The plan the chairman has for this club is fantastic, I hope I can join in.”
