AFC Totton new boy Stuart Mott will make his debut tomorrow – with manager Steve Riley planning more signings.

Defender Mott, 22, adds valuable experience to a Stags squad packed with teenagers, but is unlikely to be the last arrival at the Testwood Stadium before Christmas.

He was signed from Southern League (South & West) rivals Sholing earlier this week and Riley believes he also needs to strengthen his squad elsewhere.

Riley said: “I’m very pleased to have Stuart on board; he’s two-footed, good in the air and is someone I wanted in the summer after watching him at Alresford last season.

“He decided to go to Sholing but I’m delighted to have him now. He offers us a bit of quality and he’s a talker and a leader. We’ve got a lot of good young lads who are still developing really well but it’s been well documented that we’ve lacked that.

“And we’re still looking at getting a couple of Conference South players. I’ve spoken to the chairman about other positions that need strengthening and sp watch this space over the next couple of weeks.

“If we can get another two more experienced lads in it will do wonders for the balance of the squad because we’re going to be light when we get a few injuries.

“We’ve been lucky so far but we’re lacking strength in depth and could do with more competition for places. At the moment we’re asking teenagers to play week in, week out which is very hard for them physically.

“They’re doing a really good job but we’ve got to be realistic about what we can achieve.”

Mott will be a timely replacement for Rob Flooks, who is suspended for the trip to Shortwood United, who are unbeaten at home this season.

Riley is hoping for a positive reaction to last week’s 4-1 Red Insure Cup defeat at home to Poole Town. “We’ve created chances without taking them of late.

“Wimborne and Hereford spring to mind as games we’ve dominated without putting the ball in the back of the net,” he continued. “We need to start taking chances and get back to keeping clean sheets “The goals we’ve conceded have been down to individuals losing concentration rather than teams cutting us open and that’s been disappointing.

“But a decent run could get us in the play-off mix going into the new year and I know what’s required to get us there.”
