Saints’ attempt to end their four-match winless streak will be under threat from a strike duo who both started their footballing lives in the Tyro League.

Danny Ings and Lukas Jutkiewicz are both Southampton born and bred and were both rejected as youngsters by the Saints academy.

They now form the basis of the Burnley’s strike force who will be looking to stop Ronald Koeman’s men returning to winning ways at Turf Moor on Saturday. Jutkiewicz, a former Highfield Primary and Mountbatten School pupil, was invited to join Saints after being spotted as a ten-year-old playing in the Tyro League for first Eastleigh Earls then Winsor.

However, he left after suffering shin splints and played Tyro League football for Brendon U15s before joining Swindon and making his name as a pro.

He scored against Saints in the first of his two Championship appearances against his hometown club (for Coventry and Middlesbrough), during the promotion-winning season of 2011-12.

But the 25 year-old is yet to score in the Premier League after 15 appearances for Burnley this season.

Ings is Burnley’s top scorer this season with four in his last seven games. The former Netley Abbey youngster, who is continually linked with a move back to Saints, was released by his hometown club at the age of ten.

He went on to play for Itchen Tyro, managed by his dad, before being spotted by Bournemouth.

The match is an important one for Saints as they try to bounce back after three straight defeats at the hands of Manchester City, Arsenal and Manchester United.

They will also be keen to pick up some confidence and momentum ahead of the League Cup quarter-final with Sheffield United next Tuesday night.
