AFC TOTTON and Sholing crashed to heavy away defeats on a disastrous night for local clubs in the Evo-Stik Southern League Division One South & West.

Totton, looking to build on two straight wins, had their progress checked 6-0 at Mangotsfield United, while Sholing’s flame was extinguished 5-2 at Swindon Supermarine.

With Rory Anderson injured, Sholing handed a goalkeeping debut to young Jordan Brookes and all was well at half-time with the Boatmen leading 2-1 – Nick Watts and Byron Mason sandwiching goals around Luke Hopper’s deflected effort. But a nightmare second half began with Bradley Gray levelling straight from the restart before Sholing full-back Sam Olaofe bowed out injured.

A torrent of home goals followed with Josh Morse, Joe Shepherd and Ryan Stanners piling on the misery before the Boatmen’s Jack Smith was shown a straight red.

Totton’s night was equally painful as they shipped three goals in each half at Mangotsfield.

It was still 0-0 when tenacious midfielder Liam Gilbert limped off after turning his ankle midway through the first half. But Marcus Mapstone (29), Lewis Powell (31) and Karim Rendall (41) quickly made it 3-0 and, to add to Totton’s woes, defender Stuart Mott bowed out at half-time, also with ankle trouble.

The Mangos romped away in the second half through Shaun Lamb (68), Craig Colbourne (71) and Lewis Powell (90+2) but, given the circumstances, Totton boss Steve Riley said he “felt” for his team.

“We were five players down before we’d even kicked a ball with Nathaniel Sherborne, Zac Mouland, Jamie Blackburn, James Jennings and Steve Hollick all missing,” he said.

“The boys did well for the first 20 minutes of each half, but I felt for them out there. Two young lads, Jake Burgess, 18, and Jake Rawkins, 16, both came on for their debuts and did well, but they were up against players with loads of experience of this level and above. They needed a few old heads out there with them, but we just haven’t got them.”
