WINCHESTER City moved to within eight points of leaders Moneyfields with two games in hand after emerging 2-1 winners at Dover Road last night.

The match had been billed as a shoot-out between Moneyfields’ razor-sharp front two of Steve Hutchings and Alfie Rutherford and City’s dynamic duo of Warren Bentley and Zach Glasspool.

But Bentley didn’t even play due to ankle problems and, in the end, the outcome hinged on a long-range beauty from Winchester midfielder Micky Hubbard who cracked in the winner with power and swerve.

Moneys had gone ahead inside two minutes through Rutherford, but cancelled out their lead with an own goal from Chris Mason’s corner.

“We controlled the game from start to finish,” said delighted City assistant boss Glenn Burnett. “Fair play to Moneyfields’ management team. They came up afterwards and said we were the best team they’d played this year.”

Blackfield & Langley remain a point adrift of City in fifth after a 4-1 win at rock-botton Totton & Eling - Ekow Elliott, Jake Rowley and sub Mark Ford (2) on target.
