Michael Carberry gave a new meaning to ‘throwing your bat at the ball’ on his Big Bash debut for the Perth Scorchers.
The Hampshire batsman lost his grip while attempting to his hit his first six of the tournament, provoking laughter and applause when his Kookaburra landed 20 metres away.
Carberry was on seven when he tried to take on Adelaide Strikers seamer Kane Richardson in the fifth over of his first game at the Waca since last year’s Ashes.
He was caught behind for a 35-ball 27, which included two fours , as the Scorchers made 146-7.
Carberry took a catch as Yasir Arafat (3.4-0-26-1), who he will be playing alongside for Hampshire next season, claimed the wicket of Alex Ross.
But he finished on the losing side as Adelaide won a thriller by one wicket, with two balls to spare.
