Saints have lost Maya Yoshida for around a month as he jets off to Australia for the Asian Cup.

The defender, who came on at right back against Arsenal and has featured heavily in recent matches, will play for Japan in the tournament.

The match against the Gunners was his last before he heads off.

“He is ready for the Asia Cup,” said Koeman.

“He is now a little bit more fresh then he was after one hour against Chelsea and he’s ready to play for Japan.

“I spoke to Maya about the situation of the Asia Cup and we spoke about staying until the Arsenal game.

“Then you have one week and you need one week for that preparation because you have difference in time and temperatures to play.

“He is ready physically to play and we have to accept we lose different players to tournaments during the season.”

Saints will assess the damage to Sadio Mane after he came off injured shortly after scoring Saints’ opening goal against Arsenal.

Mane, who has scored in his last three Saints matches, was due to be heading to Equatorial Guinea to play for Senegal in the Africa Cup of Nations after Sunday’s FA Cup third round tie with Ipswich.

All that will be assessed today, though, as Saints look at the severity of his injury.

“I don’t know what happened exactly,” said Koeman after suggestions that Mane may have suffered the damage as he celebrated the goal with his teammates.

“After his first moment he continued the game but he had too many problems, too much pain, and we had to change him.

“We don’t know about his injury now, we have to wait to see if he is available for Sunday or for the Africa Cup.”

With the January transfer window now officially open, Koeman again reiterated that at most Saints will do one more deal in the coming weeks.

“Not very active,” he surmised.

“We have Elia, one new signing, and maybe next week we have to talk about another attacking player.

“I said already I’m very happy with the players we have but maybe in the position in front we need one more player.

“It’s not easy in January to bring good new players into the team and we are not sure what we will do.”
