Ronald Koeman has confirmed that Saints could sign both Tonny Vilhena and Filip Djuricic before Monday’s transfer deadline.
Vilhena is a 20-year-old defensive midfielder who Koeman has worked with at Feyenoord and who would be seen as something of a replacement for Jack Cork.
Djuricic, a 23-year-old Serbian international, is a more attacking midfielder who can play across the front roles in the side. He is currently on loan from Benfica at German club Mainz.
Cork’s departure and the injury to Shane Long means that Saints are looking to sign at least one, or possibly both of the duo, before the transfer window closes at 11pm on Monday night.
Koeman confirmed: “There’s a good chance that one of the two players, and maybe both players.”
Of Vilhena he said: “We are interested in the player because that player is not happy in Feyenoord.
“He likes to play more and is interested in changing the club.
“I like the player, I believe in the qualities of the player, he’s a young player who is 20-years-old.
“It’s one of the philosophies of the club to have young players and if I can help the player I like to do it.”
Speaking of Djuricic, he added: “I am interested in the player, it’s a good young player who can play in different positions but I don’t have any update at this moment.”
