Saints are set for a busy transfer deadline day as they try to bring in at least one new face to boost their European qualification hopes.

Filip Djuricic, right, and Tonny Vilhena remain the top targets as Ronald Koeman looks to add extra depth to his squad in the final hours of the January window, which slams shut at 11pm tonight.

Koeman was much more coy on transfer dealings after yesterday’s shock defeat to Swansea and said: “We have one day more. We will see. I expect something, yes.”

The Daily Echo understands that the Djuricic deal remains very much in the balance.

It has been a complicated transfer that has looked set to get over the line and to fail completely at various points over the last few days.

The 23-year-old Serbian playmaker is currently on loan at German club Mainz from Benfica.

Vilhena is a 20-year-old midfielder who Koeman worked with during his time at Feyenoord.

He would be more of a direct replacement for Jack Cork, but the Dutch side will not let him leave unless they can find a replacement themselves.

If Saints get early indications that both of those deals are unlikely then they will shift their attentions elsewhere, but they remain committed to trying to get at least one, or possibly both, of those players into the club today.

In terms of outgoings no major business is expected.

Despite constant rumours of big money offers for the likes of Morgan Schneiderlin, Nathaniel Clyne and the injured Jay Rodriguez, nothing has emerged during this window.

While Saints are aware somebody may test the water with Rodriguez or Clyne, with the pair into the last 18 months of their contracts and having thus far failed to sign new deals they have been offered, they remain in a strong position to fend off interest.

Though Rodriguez has yet to figure this season, Clyne has been one of the side’s star performers and Saints have no financial need to sell as they push to finish off what has been a brilliant season thus far.
