ANGLING: Competitors sampled some fair action during the second round of the Southern League and Opens which saw competitors pegged between Steamer Point and Highcliffe.

Bass, pout, whiting, flounders and rockling figured in the catch.

Chris Clark, the Daily Echo sea angling correspondent, topped the podium with 4lb 12oz followed by John Brown (Southampton) with 4lb 4oz. Clark also scooped the pool for the heaviest flatfish with a 15oz flounder, while Brown took the spoils for the heaviest round fish with a 7.5oz whiting. The pool for the longest pout was shared by Mike Groves and Tom Bagnall who both recorded fish measuring 22cm.

Results – A zone: 1 Tom Bagnall 2lb 10oz, 2 Peter Cracknell 2lb 7oz, 3 Callum Roullands 2lb 1.5oz, 4 Rob Marshall 2lb. B zone: 1 Darren Stevens 3lb 8.5oz, 2 Mike Delaney 3lb 2oz, 3 Mike Groves 2lb 15oz, 4 Ian Dancey 2lb 2.5oz. C zone: 1 Chris Clark 4lb 12oz, 2 John Brown 4lb 7oz, 3 Pete Hegg 2lb 15oz, 4 Dave Lane 2lb 13oz.

Most of the 40 competitors struggled during the Samalite League open held along the Ferry Bridge section of Chesil Beach.

But there were two quality fish recorded, including a 14lb 8oz undulate ray for Russell Preston and a 5lb 1oz spotted ray for Richard Cleal. Other species to figure included codling, whiting, pout, poor cod, pollack, dogfish and rockling. Results – A zone: 1 Russell Preston 15lb 10oz, 2 Ben Bradstock 4lb 10oz, 3 Terry Hartnell 2lb 10oz, 4 Julian Shambrook 2lb 7oz.

B zone: 1 Richard Cleal 5lb 7.75oz, 2 Charlie Tudball 3lb 11oz, 3 Rob Marshall 3lb 6oz, 4 Andy Ellard 2lb.

Durley Chine was the setting for the second round of the Wessex Spring Series where bass, pout, whiting, rockling and flounders all figured.

The pool for the longest round fish in A zone was won by Andy Mills with a 40cm bass, while the flatfish section was won by Simon Berry with a 28cm flounder. B zone saw Mark Painter take the honours in the round fish section with a 27cm whiting, while local freshwater ace Chris Albiston won the flatfish section with a 28cm flounder. Results – A zone: 1 Chris Clark 446cm, 2 Paul Kunzli 297cm, 3 Baz Edwards 292cm, 4 Chris Rogers 233cm.

B zone: 1 Mark Painter 284cm, 2 Chris Albiston 263cm, 3 Malcolm Stote 249cm, 4 Mark Hiscott 226cm.
