RYAN Bertrand will today find out whether he has joined Nathaniel Clyne and Fraser Forster in Roy Hodgson’s latest England squad.

The left-back has been outstanding at club level this season and is hoping to return to the international scene for the first time since 2012.

Bertrand has been overlooked by Hodgson so far this term, but has continued his brilliant form since England last played, back in November.

There is stiff competition at his position, however, ahead of the Euro 2016 home qualifier against Lithuania and the friendly in Italy later this month.

Number one choice Leighton Baines, of Everton, ex-Saint Luke Shaw and Arsenal’s Kieran Gibbs were all chosen last time out.

On top of that, West Ham’s Aaron Cresswell, who is also enjoying a strong season, and Tottenham’s Danny Rose are said to be under consideration.

Bertrand, who is part of the Premier League’s best defence, has outperformed many of his counterparts this season and previously admitted to his disappointment at not being picked last time.

If included, he would almost certainly join goalkeeper Forster, the usual number two to Joe Hart, and right-back Clyne, who appears to have established himself as first-choice for his country.

There might be bad news for former Saint Rickie Lambert, though.

The striker has scored just three goals since his move to Liverpool last summer and his position with England looks to be under significant threat, especially with a number of younger options beginning to emerge.

Hodgson is almost certain to bring Tottenham’s Harry Kane into the squad for the first time, with the 21-year-old having scored 26 times this season.

Wayne Rooney, Daniel Sturridge will likely be automatic selections, probably along with Danny Welbeck, while West Brom’s Saido Berahino is also pushing for a place.

There could even be some local interest in that area too.

Former Wessex League striker Charlie Austin has been in excellent form at QPR this term, with the ex-Poole Town hotshot scoring 15 times for the relegation-battlers.

Burnley’s Southampton-born forward Danny Ings has also been touted for a possible call-up.

The 23-year-old has bagged nine goals in his first top-flight season, including a recent run that saw him score five in seven matches.

Ings is due at St Mary’s this weekend as Burnley look to build on last weekend’s shock win over Manchester City.
