The world's largest indoor climbing arena has received Scotland's top tourism rating just five months after relaunching following a cash crisis which forced a temporary closure.

The Edinburgh International Climbing Arena (EICA) was yesterday awarded VisitScotland's top five-star rating, putting it on a par with world-famous attractions such as Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Yacht Britannia.

Its new status comes after a £6m refurbishment programme initiated by Edinburgh City Council which rescued the Ratho-based business from administration after previous owners were unable to find the money to complete the venture.

Graeme Gardiner, general manager of the EICA:Ratho, said: "Everyone has invested a huge amount of time and energy to ensure the EICA is the best it can be.

"It is fantastic to have an official rating to confirm our status as a world-class attraction."

The inspection covered "every area" of the business including the building itself, activities, signage, cleanliness and catering and the friendliness and knowledge of staff. Peter Lederer, chairman of VisitScotland, said: "This is a fantastic achievement and is great news for EICA and Edinburgh and the Lothians."

Run by charity Edinburgh Leisure, which operates the council's sports facilities, the centre has an aerial assault course, a bouldering room, play area, gym, spa and cafe.
