BILLY Mehmet stressed he is not getting carried away with his form for St Mirren this season because he knows there are players waiting to nick his top team place.

Mehmet set up Buddies' team- mate Stephen McGinn for his wonder goal in the 1-0 win against Rangers at Love Street earlier this month.

The big English striker was already leading scorer with the Paisley club after hitting the target seven times so far in all competitions.

However, the 24-year-old ace knows if he lets his standards slip, Saints gaffer Gus MacPherson will have no hesitation dropping him to the bench.

Billy stated: "I'm happy with the way things have gone so far, but I need to keep it going. Guys like Craig Dargo, Dennis Wyness and Jim Hamilton are ready to take my place.

"Hopefully, I can keep scoring goals and stay in the team. I'm just one goal away from the number I got last season. I'll try to take things on from there."

Mehmet believes St Mirren can build on their win over Rangers - their first at home in 22 years - when they take on Hamilton at New Douglas Park tomorrow.

However, the on-form player has stressed they will not underestimate their opponents who have more than held their own in the top flight this season.

He reflected: "We had been playing really well this season without getting many positive results. Beating Rangers was probably one of the biggest results we've had since I've been here.

"It was a great experience for the younger lads and even for some of the older players, as it was their first win against either half of the Old Firm.

"It was a brilliant achievement, but now we've got to make sure we go into the game against Hamilton with the same attitude."

Mehmet knows all about the ability of one of Hamilton's key men - former Saints star Mark Corcoran - and reckons he can cause them problems if they give him a chance.

Billy agreed: "I don't really know much about Hamilton but they've done well since they came up to the SPL and obviously Coco's there.

"We know what he can do from his time with St Mirren. We know he's got lots of pace which can cause problems.

"But I'm sure the boys at the back will be ready for him after doing so well in the Rangers game.

"They were brilliant against them and battled right to the end and hopefully that will continue when we face Hamilton. We know it will be a tough game and we won't be treating them lightly."
