Totton & Eling’s brave bid to beat the Sydenhams Wessex League drop is set to go to the wire.

Chris Marwood converted a controversial last gasp penalty as the Millers snatched a dramatic 2-1 win over Verwood Town.

Their immediate future now rests on them beating Horndean in their final match at Five Heads Park next Saturday.

They go into the game one point behind Christchurch, who crashed 6-1 to newly crowned champions Petersfield Town at Hurn Bridge.

Basement club Fareham Town threw themselves a lifeline with a Bradey Norton inspired 6-1 win over Hamworthy United at Cams Alders.

Totton bossed the first half at Millers Park, with Steve Marwood hitting the Verwood bar with a speculative 25-yarder and then testing goalkeeper Chris Lynch with a curling free kick.

Totton’s half-time lead came from a set-piece – Lynch being penalised for carrying the ball outside of the penalty area and Marwood picking out Jamie Feasey to head home.

They clung on to their 1-0 lead until deep in the second half – until Verwood equalised with a hotly disputed Taffy Richardson goal.

Totton claimed play should have been stopped when teenager Keenan New went down with blood gushing from a nose injury, but the referee waved play on and Richardson converted Jordan Fisk’s cross to make it 1-1.

A draw would have put Totton down, but in stoppage time Steve Jenkin was adjudged to have been pushed in the box and the ice-cool Marwood grabbed Totton’s winner.

Fareham, who must win their remaining matches against Newport (Tuesday evening) and Andover Town to survive, tore Hamworthy to shreds with a scintillating first half display.

Norton led the way with a hat-trick – his three goals coming in succession after Ashley Tattersall and Callum Laycock had given Fareham a 2-1 lead.

Norton’s threesome – his hat-trick goal came from the penalty spot – gave Fareham a 5-1 lead, which Mark Cotton improved after the break.
