AFC Totton are ready to play a part in history tomorrow as the first ever opponents of the brand new Salisbury FC.

The Stags, who wrapped up their Southern One South & West campaign with a 1-0 win at Tiverton on Saturday, will play Steve Claridge’s embryonic side at the Raymond McEnhill Stadium (7.30pm).

The new Salisbury club, risen from the ashes of the defunct Salisbury City FC, will field a squad of trialists as they build towards a hoped-for return to The National League System in 2015/16.

Totton boss Steve Hollick, who lives in the Salisbury area, said: “It’s an honour for us to be asked and it will be interesting to see what sort of players Steve Claridge gets together.

“We spoke about a pre-season friendly against them, but Salisbury are keen to get back to the Ray Mac and get started as soon as possible so it’s like an end-of-season pre-season fixture for us!

“Hopefully the two clubs can work closely together.

“I’m still hoping that Salisbury might come into our league next season to give us another local fixture.

Bashley are going out of it (relegated) and there are rumours that Fleet might go to the Central Division.

“With the size of support and the club Salisbury are, it would nice if they were with us.

“Totton have been through the wringer as well, so we can sympathise with what Salisbury have been going through.”

One of Totton’s new generation of players, Jake Rawkins, played a part in the 79th-minute winner at Ladysmead.

Having gone on for the unwell Craig Feeney, he combined well with Jamie Blackburn who whipped over a left-wing cross for Nathaniel Sherborne to smash home from six yards.

The goal arrived against the run of play with Hollick admitting: “It was a real smash ‘n’ grab.

“But that’s what we went for. The lads had worked hard on the training pitch with Burchy (head coach Lee Burch) to make sure Tiverton couldn’t play through us.”

Coming on top of last week’s 5-2 win over Bishop’s Cleeve, Totton have taken six points out of six since Hollick’s appointment as permanent successor to Steve Riley, leaving them 15th.

“It’s a shame the season’s over, but we’re looking forward to one last game at Salisbury,” said the boss.
