James Vince is to be rewarded for his outstanding England Lions tour of South Africa with a full international debut.

The 24 year-old’s inclusion in England’s squad for the one-day international against Ireland in Dublin on May 8 helped alleviate Hampshire’s third-day frustration against Nottinghamshire at The Ageas Bowl.

Notts closed it on 296-4, a lead of 391, with two other batsmen likely to be in England’s top four next Friday, Alex Hales (94) and captain James Taylor (53 not out), featuring prominently.

Vince has not been at his best this season (86 runs at 17) but it is only a matter of time before he returns to the form that has earned his inclusion.

So the bonus for Hampshire is that his call-up, revealed during yesterday’s lunch break, will not rule him out of any Championship matches (Hampshire do not have a game next week and he will be back for the next match against champions Yorkshire at Headingley on May 10).

Assuming he retains his place in the squad for the ODI series against New Zealand and Australia, which includes fixtures at The Ageas Bowl on June 14 and September 3, Vince will miss at least six Hampshire matches (three T20 Blast, three Championship), later this season.

But his call-up is cause for celebration. Vince has been touted as a future England player since impressing on debut against Notts six years ago and as a big-game player the international stage should bring out the best in him.

Vince has matured as captain of Hampshire’s T20 side and captained the Lions to a 3-1 one-day series victory against South Africa A during the winter, having scored 261 runs at 130.5 in the two drawn ‘Tests’ in January.

He has been included in a refreshingly youthful  post-World Cup XI: Alex Hales (Notts), Jason Roy (Surrey), James Taylor (captain, Notts), Vince (Hampshire), Jonny Bairstow (Yorkshire), Sam Billings (Kent), Zaphar Ansari (Surrey), David Willey (Northants), Lewis Gregory (Somerset), Tim Bresnan (Yorkshire), Steven Finn(Middlesex).

The ECB will add “a number of players” to it when they name the England team for the third Test against the West Indies, which begins on Friday.

It will be a surprise if Vince does not bat in England’s top four alongside Hales, who continued his blistering start to the season as Nottinghamshire dominated Hampshire today.

Hales is the country's leading run scorer with 666 after following his first-innings 141 with 94 (127 balls).

He and Brendan Taylor (103) shared a second-wicket stand of 164 after Notts secured a first-innings lead of 95 by taking Hampshire’s last six wickets for 100 runs.

They both capitalised after being dropped early on - Hales on 28 by James Tomlinson at short fine-leg and Taylor on seven by Danny Briggs at mid-wicket - as Notts ensured Hampshire will be hoping for tomorrow's forecasted rain.
