It was good to see "old" Darren Clarke win the British Open Golf Championship after many years of trying.

Darren, who has experienced terrible tragedy in his personal life, is one of the most well-liked and respected players in modern golf and he thoroughly deserved his win. It was also fitting that “gentleman” Tom Pellereau should win The Apprentice. Perhaps good manners and consideration for others can still mean something.

It is not necessary to travel to Naples to see a modern, fully functioning tram system (Letters, July 16). Three years ago I visited Reims, a city with as much history as Edinburgh, and around the same size. There were no trams, and no sign of tram works in the town centre, apart from a section of archaeological research which was being treated as a supplementary attraction. In April this year, the trams started running.
