Saints are hoping to tie up the signing of Jordy Clasie imminently as a replacement for Morgan Schneiderlin – and make a tidy profit in the process.

Schneiderlin’s £25m move to Manchester United has now been sealed, allowing Saints to press ahead with the capture of 24-year-old Dutch midfielder Clasie.

Saints are set to sign the player for a fee of that could reach up to £10m, thus netting a tidy profit in the process.

It continues the club’s good work in the transfer market over the last couple of years, as they have added considerable extra strength in depth via shrewd transfer business that has seen them get top dollar for the players they have sold and buy wisely.

Last summer Saints brought in around £90m as they sold Luke Shaw, Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren, Calum Chambers and Rickie Lambert.

The club confirmed that the vast majority of that was spent as they signed the likes of Graziano Pelle, Dusan Tadic, Sadio Mane, Shane Long, Florin Gardos and Fraser Forster, as well as loan moves for Ryan Bertrand and Toby Alderwerield.

Saints then paid a further £10m in January to turn Bertrand’s stay into a permanent one.

The sale of Schneiderlin and Nathaniel Clyne for a combined £35m this summer has given Saints the flexibility to manoeuvre again.

They have been active in securing Juanmi, Cedric Soares, Cuco Martina and Maarten Stekelenburg for in excess of £10m.

The capture of Clasie will boost that total still further with Saints still in the market for more fresh faces.

With just two players having departed to make way for all the new faces, and with the return of Jay Rodriguez, Ronald Koeman will have far superior depth to his squad as they prepare to battle on four fronts next season.

Schneiderlin’s move brought to an end a seven year stay at Saints, which began when he joined for just £1.2m in 2008.

Upon signing for United, with whom he has already jetted off a pre-season tour to America, Schneiderlin said: "I am delighted to be a Manchester United player. Once I learned that United were interested in signing me, it was a very easy decision to make.

"I have enjoyed seven very happy years with Southampton and it’s a club that will always be in my heart. But the chance to be part of this squad to help this great club be successful was too good to miss.

"I’m excited to be starting that journey on our trip to the USA. I know what Manchester United means to fans all over the world and I’m looking forward to experiencing that."

Saints executive director Les Reed reflected: “Morgan leaves with our sincere appreciation for his service across the past seven years.

“We are under way with our plans to strengthen our midfield ¬– both with players from our academy and outside the club.”
