AFC TOTTON drew their final pre-season friendly 1-1 against Steve Claridge's Salisbury in front of a 460 crowd at the Raymond McEnhill Stadium.

The notable absentees from Steve Hollick's side were Marc Diaper (calf), Craig Feeney and Jake Rawkins (both unavailable), but Sherborne returned to the squad, writes Adrian Rose.

Salisbury began the game at a ferocious speed and forced two quick corners, but Totton were alert to the danger and saw off the early threat.

The Stags then started to grow into the match as Nick Watts and Mark Lilley both had good looking crosses into the area turned away by the Salisbury back line.

Claudio Herbert, a livewire on Salisbury's right wing, had a chance to cut inside and strike with his left foot, but the shot was scuffed and went harmlessly wide.

This seemed to spark the Whites to life, mounting periods of sustained pressure.

Just before the half-hour mark Totton's Liam Hibberd made a great last-ditch challenge to stop Herbert from laying on a golden chance for the oncoming Salisbury forwards.

The Whites kept pushing, but the Stags kept repelling them - and that was the story of the first half until the 42nd minute.

Sherborne and Lilley teamed up to force a couple of Salisbury errors, but Lilley's shot was straight at former Stags goalkeeper Gareth Barfoot.

Totton started the second half a bit brighter than the first and, two minutes in, they Stags had a quick break.

Watts travelled with the ball down the right before squaring to Lilley, who got the ball caught under his feet and couldn't quite turn it in.

Shortly afterwards, Calum Brockway had a free-kick just inside the Stags' half and lofted into the Totton area. It evaded everybody and bounced near the six-yard box, forcing keeper Steve Mowthorpe to tip the ball over the bar.

The Stags again started to pick up the pace and, just before the hour mark, Watts slipped the ball across the 'D' for Lilley, who had time to look up and shoot, but his effort was wide of the far post.

With 62 minutes on the clock, Totton broke the deadlock. Sherborne picked up the ball on the edge of the area after Salisbury had failed to clear their lines. His shot was blocked, but the rebound fell straight into the path of ex-Sholing man Watts who side-footed home from close range.

Salisbury took the game straight to Totton, but Mowthorpe was never truly troubled until the 79th minute.

A seemingly innocuous throw-in was taken on Salisbury's right and the ball found its way to Danny Young who beat Mowthorpe to level the game up.

In truth, Salisbury probably deserved their goal for the long periods of pressure they had and, with the momentum of an equaliser, they went on the hunt for a winner.

With 5 minutes to go, Salisbury had two or three efforts in a row blocked by the Totton defence - and Neil Williams, in particular, who appeared to throw himself infront of a shot.

Steve Hollick's Stags have now completed their pre-season programme and are preparing for the real business this Saturday when they travel to Taunton Town for their Evo-Stik South & West opener.
