HAMPSHIRE seamers Brad Wheal and Ryan Stevenson have signed two-year deals.

Both have been excellent finds but Stevenson's deal completes a remarkable summer for the 23 year-old all-rounder.

He began it by moving up four divisions to play for Torquay CC, who he helped win the Devon Premier League, while setting up a campsite business with his girlfriend.

After being spotted playing for Devon by Hampshire director of cricket Giles White two months ago, he scored a vital 30 before taking 1-33 in Durham’s second innings on his Championship debut at the Riverside last week.

Stevenson, left, who was replaced by Mason Crane at Taunton yesterday, said: “It’s great to have that stability to know I will be at the club for at least the next two years.

“I’m really looking forward to working hard on my bowling to hopefully cement my place in the first team.”

Wheal, 19, was spotted in South Africa by Hampshire coach Dale Benkenstein during the winter and took eight LV County Championship wickets at 49 apiece, including 4-101 against Middlesex at Lord’s, during the first half of the season.

He said: “I’ve settled in really nicely since I’ve arrived and having the opportunity to play in the first-team this year was more than I could have hoped for.

“I came to the Ageas Bowl looking to prove myself and show everyone what I can do and I feel I have done that.

"It’s a brilliant feeling being offered a new contract and I’m excited for the next two years.”

Director of Cricket Giles White said: “Brad has shown a lot of promise with the ball this year whilst Ryan has impressed us immensely during the short time he has been with us. We are looking forward to seeing them progress.”
