Fidel Edwards has signed a new one-year contract with Hampshire after a sensational first season with the county.

The former West Indies star continued his outstanding first season with the county by finishing with 10-145 in the must-win final match against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge yesterday.

It took the 33 year-old Kolpak signing's tally for the season to 45 LV= County Championship wickets at 20.88, a remarkable effort considering he had only played three first-class matches in two-and-a half years when he made his debut in May.

His availability came to Hampshire's attention during their pre-season tour of Barbados.

Without him, they would have been relegated, but now have a good chance of staying up as the season reaches a thrilling finale at Trent Bridge today.

Hampshire Director of Cricket Giles White: “Fidel’s been fantastic for us this year – he’s bowled with a lot of pace and know-how in varying conditions and we’re delighted to have him with us again.

"He has always expressed his enjoyment at playing for Hampshire and he was thankful that we showed faith in him to start with – he adds a different dimension to our bowling attack and this will give the changing room a huge boost going into next season.”
