IF there wasn’t already enough reason to give Chris Todd the full-time management position at Eastleigh then last night's dramatic 3-2 home victory over Vanarama National League leaders Forest Green Rovers should be it.

Today chairman Stewart Donald will carry out his last interview for the vacant managerial position left by Richard Hill last month – with three people in the running for the role.

Caretaker Todd, who has made clear that he wants the job, gave further evidence to his abilities, following big victories at Tranmere and Wrexham, with a pulsating, last minute win over high-flying Rovers.

Substitute Ross Lafayette’s only touch of the game won it for the Spitfires, but Yemi Odubade’s brace and brilliant display – torturing his former charges throughout – should live long in the memory.

Odubade gave the Spitfires the early lead before Aaron O’Connor levelled and Elliott Frear’s brilliant strike gave Ady Pennock’s side a goal advantage at half-time.

The attacker, who had a loan spell at the New Lawn in 2012/13, levelled it soon into the second period before Lafayette’s winner on 90 minutes as Eastleigh produced an outstanding second-half display.

“It was incredible,” said Todd. “The lads have done outstandingly well for me and they did on Saturday too.

“To put in a performance like that after Saturday – I can’t ask for anymore really.

At half-time, Todd told his side to keep faith.

“Just keep believing,” Todd said about his speech at the interval.

“Keep doing what you’re doing because I felt like we didn’t deserve to be 2-1 down.

“The boys were a bit shell-shocked.

“I just said do not come off what you’re doing because it’s been very very good.

“If we do what we do first-half in the second-half then we’ll come out with a result and that’s what happened.”

There’s been little to cheer about at the Silverlake Stadium of late, with the Spitfires suffering three successive home defeats, but this one changed everything.

With little more than two minutes gone Eastleigh smiles were spread wide once more as Odubade – in for the suspended James Constable – pounced on a rebound from Lee Cook’s free-kick to poke home.

After that it all unravelled rather quickly with those grins were soon wiped, as some statuesque defending allowed O’Connor to run clean through, round goalkeeper Ross Flitney and slot coolly home with 21 minutes gone.

The Gloucestershire side then took the lead on the brink of half-time as Frear slammed home from the edge of the box – his impressive left footed drive ploughing through the crowded box.

Odubade left Forest Green defenders crying offside as he placed into the top left of the net after Jai Reason had dinked a ball into the box to make 2-2.

The Spitfires were dominant as the half wore on and finally in the dying embers Lafayette stabbed home from close range in the box with seconds left to play.
