Dimi Mascarenhas has backed his team-mates to find the form to guide Hampshire through to the quarter-finals of the Twenty20 cup for only the second time in five years.

This afternoon's rain-affected six-wicket defeat against Surrey at the Brit Oval marked the end of Mascarenhas' involvement in the Twenty20 cup group stages.

Today the 29 year-old all-rounder joins up with the rest of Peter Moores' England one-day squad tomorrow who will face the West Indies in two Twenty20 internationals on June 28 and 29, before three one-day internationals on July 1,4 and 7.

But Mascarenhas, who was handed the Twenty20 Hampshire captaincy in the absence of Shane Warne and Shaun Udal from the squad, is confident that his fellow Hawks can progress to the latter stages of the competition without him despite picking up just one point from their first two games.

Mascarenhas said: "I have been confident all year. We always look forward to this competition and we have under performed.

"I think we have have got some good players and once they start firing we are going to get some big scores on the board.

"Out bowlers? I can't fault them at the moment we are bowling some really good stuff.

"We are still in the competition so we have a lot to play for".

While admitting that Mascarenhas' departure will be a "difficult" loss to cope with, manager Paul Terry believes the opening provides other members of the Hampshire squad with a chance to show what they an do.

"Dimi going is a bit of a loss", Terry reflected.

"You look back to last year and Sean Ervine missed a whole lot through injury and they are the sort of key players you need in a side.

"Dimi's shoes are difficult shoes to fill but someone will have to stand up and fill those shoes.

"Not in the way the way that he plays but, whether it's a good bowling spell or a good batting display somewhere, it's up to the other guys to fill that now".

Nic Pothas takes over as captain for tomorrow's Twenty20 trip to Southgate to face Middlesex, while Jimmy Adams will replace Mascarenhas in the starting XI.
